You are the type of person who enjoys using biological expertise and analytical skills to solve challenging environmental and regulatory issues with innovative and guidance-based solutions. You are highly motivated to work both independently and as part of a team to assist a project through various regulatory compliance processes, prepare technical documents, meet client objectives, and analyze and protect sensitive biological resources by properly applying local, state, and federal requirements. You believe strongly in the value of preparing robust, concise, and clearly written reports, application documents, and communication so that land use planners, environmental regulators, and other decision-makers have technically accurate, logical, objective, and reliable information to support their decisions regarding your clients’ projects. You are motivated by the prospect of working collaboratively with other industry experts and leveraging your regional knowledge to expand biological services within Southern California.
Ascent is seeking a full-time junior to mid-level biologist to join our Natural Resources team in our San Diego office. In a typical week in this position, you might:
· Assist with field assessments and impact evaluations for botanical, wildlife, and aquatic resources.
· Assist with resource agency permitting.
· Conduct reconnaissance-level surveys to classify habitats suitable for rare, threatened, or endangered species.
· Conduct rare plant surveys in a variety of native habitats.
· Map boundaries of vegetation communities, including stands of invasive plants.
· Evaluate potential environmental impacts and develop mitigation measures in biological resource sections of CEQA or NEPA documents.
· Attend industry trainings, conferences, or workshops to continue developing your biological skillset and further your career.
· Utilize digital field data collection tools and identify new approaches to enhance survey effectiveness.
· Prepare biological service proposals and schedules with guidance from a senior biologist based on client needs and requests.
· Contribute to project success by providing clients with excellent service and high-quality technical information.
· Participate in in-house training sessions and discussions regarding current natural resource science topics, best practices, and regulatory changes.
· Travel throughout California, with the possibility of overnight and out-of-region trips, to project sites to monitor compliance with environmental protection measures.

Requirements
- Minimum of a BA or BS in environmental science, biology, botany, ecology, natural resources, or another related field (candidates with the equivalent in knowledge and experience may also be considered)
- Experience identifying plants of Southern California and/or identifying and mapping vegetation communities, habitats, and land cover types
- Map reading and field survey techniques
- Proficiency in computer-based technologies
- Excellent documentation and data management skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in varied environmental conditions, including inclement weather, rugged terrain
- Flexibility to travel to remote locations for multiple days or weeks at a time
- Qualities: detail-oriented, resourceful, strong time management skills, enthusiasm for career development, positive attitude
Work environment
- This position will necessitate both in-office and field-based work.
- This position may also be considered for a hybrid work arrangement depending on the candidate’s home location and proximity to Ascent’s offices.
Physical Demands
- Working outdoors and conducting fieldwork that may involve walking in uneven or difficult-to-navigate terrains over long distances in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time.
Travel
- Travel is required, including overnight or multiple-day trips
