JOB SUMMARY: These temporary NTE 1039 positions are located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, in the Resource Stewardship Division. MAJOR DUTIES: The major duties for GS-05 Hydrologic Technician include implementation of established water quality monitoring protocols, deploying, maintaining, and retrieving water quality monitoring equipment, and assisting in data analysis and the preparation of reports. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted or moved on a routine basis. Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office setting, which is typically well lighted and ventilated, and in the field, where the incumbent may encounter adverse weather conditions, steep or uneven terrain, and other nuisances. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by cold temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.
