Overview
Duties
As a Wildlife Refuge Manager your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversee and administer refuge lands, facilities, and refuge programs and budgets per applicable laws, policies, plans, and NEPA requirements, including refuge interest in land acquisition (including fee title, conservation easements, leases, land exchanges, cooperative agreements, etc.).
- Leads efforts to connect people with wildlife, plants, and the land by providing equitable and just ways to deepen personal relationships with nature, while balancing healthy natural habitat management with opportunities for education, visitor engagement, youth employment, community involvement, and stewardship.
- Represents FWS as a refuge management expert with elected and appointed Federal, state and local government officials and employees, the media, local and national level environmental and conservation groups, member of academia, Tribal representatives, corporate partners, and the general public on issues affecting natural resource management in the Refuge Complex.
- Performs a full range of supervisory/managerial duties and responsibilities over the assigned staff and organizational elements. Promotes and demonstrates a strong commitment to workforce diversity. Identifies program training/mandatory needs and expectations and identifies work priorities for employees, volunteers, contractors and partners.

- Supervisory Probationary Period: Selectees who have not previously completed a supervisory probationary period, will be required to serve a one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period for this position.

Qualifications
Only experience and education obtained by 01/03/2025 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
Basic Requirement:
- Possess a degree in zoology, wildlife management, or an appropriate field of biology that included at least 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in such wildlife courses as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; and 3 semester hours in botany, and 3 semester hours in conservation biology. NOTE: Transcripts are required.
- Possess a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in one of the fields described in A above that included at least 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in such wildlife courses as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; and 3 semester hours in botany, and 3 semester hours in conservation biology, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: Transcripts are required, and your resume must contain sufficient detail at this level of work.
- Previously occupied a position in the GS-0485 series prior to December 3, 2010 and meet the basic education requirement of the previous qualification standard. Previous standard: bachelor or higher degree with major in zoology, wildlife management, or an appropriate field of biology, that includes 9 semester hours in zoology; 6 semester hours in wildlife; and 9 semester hours in botany. Must submit a copy of my SF-50 (Personnel Action), dated prior to Dec 3, 2010, showing that the position of GS-0485 series was held. NOTE: Transcripts required.
Minimum Qualification [GS-13]
- Possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience may include: 1) Planning, administering, evaluating, managing, and/or operating programs, activities, and projects associated with conserving and managing fish and/or wildlife resources on public or private lands; 2) Collaborating with internal and/or external groups on natural resource issues, such as Federal and/or State agencies, tribal governments, environmental groups, recreation groups, or the public; 3) Supervising a team to accomplish tasks and projects in a land conservation setting.
