Role:
Lila Sciences is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Contractor to lead critical safety initiatives in the physical sciences space. Reporting directly to the Senior Lab Operations Manager, this role combines technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and practical application to ensure the safety and compliance of chemical processes, materials research, and laboratory operations.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in driving EHS strategies, conducting risk assessments, and implementing safety protocols within a fast-paced, research-driven environment. This is an excellent opportunity to work with cutting-edge teams and contribute to groundbreaking innovations while ensuring a robust safety culture.
Responsibilities Include:
- Manage the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and materials used in research and development, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, REACH, GHS).
- Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for hazardous chemical and material processes.
- Collaborate with Flagship EHS on the chemical and materials inventory system and ensure accurate, up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Ensure all operations meet local, state, and federal EHS regulations, with a specific focus on hazardous material use and environmental compliance.
- Stay informed of changes in EHS regulations impacting materials science, chemistry, and physics research, and communicate updates to stakeholders.
- Evaluate safety risks associated with the design and implementation of custom laboratory equipment and experimental setups.
- Partner with scientists and engineers to identify and mitigate hazards during the development and execution of experimental processes.
- Develop and deliver training programs on EHS topics such as chemical safety, materials handling, and experimental risk management.
- Provide technical guidance to teams working with hazardous chemicals, specialized equipment, or advanced materials.
- Design and implement emergency response plans for incidents involving chemicals, materials, or laboratory equipment.
- Lead incident investigations, conduct root cause analyses, and recommend corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
- Work closely with scientists, engineers, and lab staff to continuously improve EHS procedures and safety tools.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections of chemical processes, materials research, and laboratory environments to identify and address safety risks.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in EHS roles, with a focus on chemical safety, materials research, and regulatory compliance.
- Hands-on experience in laboratories or industries working with hazardous chemicals, advanced materials, or experimental equipment is essential.
- Relevant certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are strongly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of hazardous chemical and material properties, as well as risk assessment methodologies.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety standards, experimental risk management, and advanced material processes.
- Proficiency in physical sciences processes, including thermodynamics, energy systems, and material testing.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Highly detail-oriented with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing safety risks.
Working at Lila Sciences, you would have access to advanced technology in the areas of:
-
- AI experimental design and simulation
- Automated custom instrumentation
- Generative molecular and material design
