What You’ll Work On
The Director of Research & Development (R&D), Environmental Division, leads the hardware and embedded systems research and development efforts of Campbell Scientific’s Environmental Division. This role is responsible for driving the design, development, and delivery of cutting-edge solutions that support our mission to advance science and technology for the benefit of humankind. The Director will oversee the R&D team, manage resources effectively, and ensure the alignment of R&D initiatives with the division’s strategic goals.
You’ll Support Your Team by Performing the Following Key Tasks
- Create and maintain a strong culture in accordance with Campbell Scientific’s core values – Accountability, Respect, Client-centric, Teamwork, Innovation, Continuous Improvement.
- Establish and maintain a culture of technical rigor and engineering excellence.
- Develop and execute the R&D strategy within the Environmental Division, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Lead efforts to bridge the gap between technical innovation and business strategy. Understand market dynamics, client demands, and revenue goals to guide R&D efforts that support sustainable growth and competitive advantage.
- Partner with divisional and executive leadership to translate strategic vision into actionable R&D initiatives.
- Foster collaboration across functions to streamline product development processes and enhance time-to-market efficiency.
- Apply data-driven decision-making and problem-solving skills to address challenges, manage resources, and balance competing priorities.
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate technical concepts and project progress effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and alignment throughout the organization.
- Ensure the team has the resources, training, and tools necessary to excel.
- Oversee the design, prototyping, testing, and production of new hardware products.
- Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
- Implement robust processes for project tracking and performance evaluation.
- Stay abreast of the latest trends and advancements in hardware technologies for environmental applications.
- Partner with external research organizations, universities, and industry stakeholders to enhance innovation.
- Represent the R&D team in discussions with customers, vendors, and industry partners.
- Ensure all hardware development activities comply with applicable regulatory standards and company policies.
- Maintain rigorous quality assurance processes to ensure reliability and performance of hardware products.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in hardware and embedded systems development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role, including strong business acumen to effectively collaborate with finance, human resources, sales, marketing, and client services teams.
- Demonstrate technical knowledge and experience in data acquisition and/or sensor development.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in hardware development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in leading R&D projects from concept to market.
- Strong understanding of environmental measurement technologies and applications.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to foster innovation and manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
Typical office work environment with computer workstation and travel environment (traveling to meet with clients, potential clients, and to industry tradeshows and conferences).
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds over short distances as needed while fulfilling job responsibilities. Must be capable of sitting for extended periods of time, bending, twisting, and other movement consistent with office environments. Must be able to travel internationally on a regular basis. Travel may be up to 80 days per year.
