Senior Director of Environmental Health & Safety
Our company, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is a leading freight rail services and transportation company. We employ nearly 1,000 employees in more than 100 locations across 33 states and operate the largest railcar services network in the industry. Our Repair Facilities division encompasses 14 large freight and tank car repair facilities, and its Field and Rail Services division operates more than 50 railroad repair agent locations, two short line railroads, and a dozen contract switching and transloading sites, and provides railcar storage and track maintenance services.
Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and execute enterprise level EHS leadership to provide world class environmental health and safety policies, procedures and protocols across three business units
- Maintain and share expert knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and compliance requirements including OSHA, FMSCA, EPA, DOT, FRA and AAR
- Serve as subject matter expert on regulatory requirements in the areas we work to ensure policies and procedures are updated as necessary
- Manage a team of EHS professionals via direct or matrix relationship to ensure continued development and execution
- Lead governance and compliance activities across the organization to mitigate and manage enterprise risk
- Develop, maintain, and analyze KPIs and trends. Provide regular analysis and information on trends and make appropriate recommendations to reduce risk exposure.
- Serve as a business partner to identify, implement, valuate and maintain EHS processes related to hazard identification, risk assessment, training and record keeping
- Manage emergency response and incident investigations
- Execute safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure best practices and compliance across the enterprise
- Facilitate the timely exchange of information across the enterprise to include best practices, risk identification and prevention
- Lead site level efforts to prioritize and reduce risk
- Promotes high level of employee and management engagement around EHS initiatives
- Assists in the preparation of budgeting for safety, health and property protections
- Lead site level EHS resources through active matrix management
- Lead continuous improvement of all safety programs
- Oversee Workers Compensation programs to ensure compliance and minimize liability through active case management
- Integrates environmental management with long-term sustainability goals into our policies and procedures
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience
- Ten or more years of demonstrated safety leadership experience
- Strong working knowledge of relevant industry standards, legislation, and operating procedures
- OSHA certification preferred
- Ability to prioritize multiple objectives and priorities with time-sensitive deadlines
- Proven ability to diagnose root cause problems, identify solutions, develop implementable projects, articulate ideas crisply and build consensus
- Strategic thinker with strong communication skills
- Must have passion for the safety of our colleagues
- Heavy industrial or transportation required; rail industry experience preferred
- Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MicroSoft Project, Smartsheet and all basic tools of Continuous Improvement and LEAN Six Sigma
- Position may be based in any state where our company is a registered employer but incumbent must be available for frequent travel, up to 50% of the time
Physical Demands & Work EnvironmentThis position works primarily in an indoor office setting and requires frequent sitting, standing and close vision computer work with some bending, stooping, and lifting up to 20 pounds. Role may require visits to our other work locations which includes exposure to an industrial manufacturing environment and requires personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate.
