Position Summary:
This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC), a fast-growing, results-focused wildlife conservation non-profit seeking an employee with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds throughout the Americas. ABC tackles the greatest problems facing birds today, innovating and building on rapid advancements in science to halt extinctions, protect habitats, eliminate threats, and build capacity for bird conservation.
The Grants Officer’s principal responsibility is to work with ABC’s conservation teams to submit grants to public funding sources and to help manage those grants throughout the grant life cycle. The location can be remote or in an ABC office located in either Washington, D.C. or Marshall, Virginia.
The Grants Officer should be extremely diligent and detail-oriented, with a strong background in federal grantmaking, ideally from agencies in the environmental sector such as the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and USDA Forest Service. The Grants Officer will understand budgets and federal match requirements, as well as be skilled at tracking and managing timelines to submit applications on time and meet all grant obligations post-award. This position requires computer proficiency, excellent organizational and writing/editing skills, a data-driven mindset, and a willingness to quickly learn and adopt ABC programs and structures. They are in regular contact with ABC staff and granting agencies. This work requires initiative, flexibility, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Primary Duties:
- Research public funding sources, monitor calls for proposals, evaluate and present funding opportunities to ABC’s conservation teams.
- Lead on the preparation and submission of the proposal package. This includes coordinating and contributing to the proposal narrative and budget development, as well as gathering and preparing any supporting documents and attachments as needed.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures on the submission and management of grants.
- Track grant application status by creating and updating Grant Plans in ABC’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, EveryAction. Steward grants throughout the grant life cycle, including tracking match requirements, handling modifications, and other administrative requirements. Monitor grants in ABC’s Grant Management System, NetSuite, to ensure milestones are met by deadline.
- Lead on the preparation and submission of grant reports, including creating report production schedules and coordinating report drafting across teams, reviewing narrative and financial reports, gathering supporting documents as needed, and submitting reports.
- Coordinate and lead grant launch and close-out meetings and regular internal grant reviews with relevant program staff and finance team members.
- Review grants and contracts for organizational adherence to required federal and other donor requirements.
- Maintain a complete electronic record for each grant, filing final versions of proposal submissions, reports, amendment requests, etc.
- Maintain and support revenue tracking systems and update the system with new grants.
- Support program staff in the subawarding process to third-party entities such as partners and contractors.
- Serve as a liaison with the Conservation, Finance and Operations teams.
- Assist with other projects as needed.

- Three or more years of relevant, full time experience in grant application and management. Experience with government grants preferred, particularly in the environmental sector.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Attention to deadlines and detail-oriented, particularly with regard to grant agreements, contracts, and other related legal documents.
- Team player, and able to work independently.
- Strong MS Office skills, including demonstrated experience working with databases.
- Patience and perseverance in understanding and explaining issues.
- Sense of humor.
