This role supports Radius Recycling in achieving the highest safety and compliance standards within fleet operations. The Senior Fleet Safety Manager will develop and oversee fleet safety strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance across the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico while fostering a culture of safety.
Pay Range: $155k - $175k
Key Responsibilities
Safety Strategy and Compliance
- Develop and implement fleet safety policies, procedures, and standards to reduce over-the-road accidents and Department of Transportation (DOT) violations annually.
- Stay updated on DOT, FMCSA, and local regulatory changes, ensuring company-wide compliance.
- Conduct mock DOT audits and maintain Driver Qualification Files in compliance with federal and local regulations.
- Ensure adherence to the Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) mandate and oversee corrective actions for non-compliance.
Accident Investigation and Prevention
- Lead thorough investigations into accidents, analyze root causes, and recommend preventive measures.
- Collaborate with management on accident reports, corrective actions, and retraining initiatives.
- Monitor company behavioral safety scores (e.g., SAFER portal) and provide recommendations for improvement.
Fleet Safety System Optimization
- Oversee and enhance the use of fleet safety systems (e.g., Lytx, JJ Keller, ProTread) to achieve objectives.
- Implement and monitor a fleet safety audit scorecard and dashboard for real-time performance insights.
- Standardize vehicle maintenance tracking using Business Intelligence (BI) tools and proactive scheduling.
Driver Training and Engagement
- Develop and deliver annual driver training programs in collaboration with the health and safety team.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with drivers to address concerns, provide feedback, and reinforce safety protocols.
- Promote a safety-first culture by fostering open communication and collaboration.
Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with DOT drug testing and physical screening requirements in partnership with HR.
- Coordinate with corporate risk management for comprehensive accident investigations.
- Serve as the primary liaison with federal and state agencies regarding regulations and policies.
- Monitor company J.J. Keller accounts to ensure all roadside inspections are reviewed, corrective actions are completed, and Data Q requests are submitted for infractions not meeting alleged regulatory standards.
Leadership and Development
- Mentor and develop a direct report (Fleet Safety Compliance Analyst) and Regional Logistics Managers (RLMs).
- Drive continuous improvement through coaching, training, and performance feedback.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with Operations, Logistics, Environmental, HR, and other teams to integrate safety practices.
- Use performance data and risk analysis to establish annual goals for fleet safety improvements.
- Ensure fleet operations meet all regulatory requirements through regular audits and corrective actions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or at least 10 years of experience in transportation/industrial safety.
- Expert knowledge of Federal and State DOT regulations.
- Proficiency with MS Office and safety systems (e.g., Lytx, JJ Keller, SAFER).
- Certified Director of Safety (preferred) or ability to obtain certification within one year.
- Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
Availability to travel up to 40% of the time
