GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Coordinates the sustainability program of the MWCD and responds to questions and concerns of the public regarding waste reduction, energy efficiency, pollution prevention, recycling, and green energy. Prepares, presents, and promotes sustainability programs for the general public and outside agencies. Communicates with internal staff including parks and marinas on the sustainability program and opportunities.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:
JOB DUTIES in order of importance
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Leads the District’s efforts to integrate sustainability practices and technology into MWCD facilities. Will work cohesively with all departments and facilities to identify areas of waste and work toward solutions to monitor, record, and reduce waste. Develops, coordinates, and tracks progress of a sustainability plan for the District including the development of specific plans focused on individual MWCD parks and marinas. Advises the Chief of Conservation and Executive Director on related activities, programs, and initiatives. Works with Chief of Conservation to develop a culture of sustainability and good stewardship for our properties, facilities, and vehicle fleet. Assists with the monitoring of energy consumption and landfill waste across the District. Assists in preparing the sustainability component of the Conservation budget and track expenditures.

Lead efforts to increase recycling at our events, venues, and for our visitors. Coordinates litter prevention and cleanup efforts through volunteer events, community collection events and works with OEPA and solid waste districts on programs intended for waste reduction and recycling. Assists with the planning of solar and other renewable power projects and initiatives. Work in team settings to identify grant funding for MWCD fleet conversion to EV or hybrid technology and charging stations. Assist in environmental and green infrastructure planning projects across the District.

Build a broad collaborative of partners at all levels (federal, state, local and non-profit) to identify and implement grant funding which supports sustainability efforts. Be a training provider and coordinate sustainability concepts and projects to staff and general public. Identify opportunities and work with university and industry partners to utilize MWCD assets as a catalyst for research projects geared toward sustainability and green energy technology development. Assist the Chief of Conservation in the development and administration of a research collaborative to support strategic conservation and sustainability initiatives among university and agency partners.

Develop informational and educational material for MWCD website, newsletter, and related media regarding sustainability and promote efforts and opportunities for local communities. Develop, attend, and present, at workshops, community outreach programs, conferences, and seminars to promote and coordinate MWCD sustainability programs. Independently answers complex inquiries and correspondence. Determines new opportunities and makes recommendations to administration. Travels throughout the District to promote and implement the sustainability program and opportunities. Provides technical advice to aid administration in decision making. The primary function includes performing administrative duties associated with the operations of the sustainability program including the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. May also manage projects in other areas as assigned. Duties include performance of work directly related to the general business operations of the MWCD.
