JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in Mesa Verde National Park, in the Roads and Trails branch of the Facility Management Division in Mesa Verde National Park, CO. Incumbent provides first level supervision, planning, and direction for a group of nonsupervisory workers engaged in the operations, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, preservation, and project management oversight of heavily utilized roads, tunnels, bridges, and trails. The incumbent of this position will work directly under the Chief of Maintenance. The Engineering Equipment Operator Supervisor provides leadership within the Roads and Trails Branch of the Facility Management at Mesa Verde National Park and is directly supervised by the Chief of Facility Management The incumbent oversees all operational, maintenance and construction activities associated with the parks roads asset portfolio that includes approximately 75 miles of paved and unpaved roads, 25 Miles of trails and over 400 signs dispersed throughout the park. The incumbent is responsible for all administrative needs and planning of day-to-day and long-term work for a diverse trade staff comprised of a: WL-09 Engineering Equipment Operator Work Leader, two WG-10 Engineering Equipment Operators, one WG-09 Equipment Mechanic, WG-07 Trails Worker and a WG-04 Laborer. Incumbent serves as Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) on government construction and service contracts and as Agreement Technical Representative (ATR) on task agreements. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required climbing in and out of different machines, pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation and lifting such items as opening and closing tail gates on dump trucks. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the frequent adjustments made and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibrations of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Working Conditions: Outdoor temperatures range from -10° F to 100° F. Although much of the weather is fair and mild, summer conditions include hot windy weather with dirt, dust, noise and potential hazards in the form of rock and mudslides due to rain. Winter conditions include rain, snow, whiteouts, and blizzards. Will perform all duties at elevations from 6000 to 8500 feet above sea level. The incumbent will be working both in and out of doors. Working indoors requires sitting at a desk for long periods of time and/or attending meetings. Park Information: Located in Southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 to preserve and interpret the archaeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people. For over 700 years, the Ancestral Pueblo people built thriving communities on the mesas and in the cliffs of Mesa Verde. Today, the park protects the rich cultural heritage of 26 Pueblos and Tribes and offers visitors a spectacular window into the past while also highlighting contemporary connections. This World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park is home to over a thousand species, including several that live nowhere else on earth. Nearby Yucca House National Monument is managed under Mesa Verde. It is an undeveloped NPS unit and protects a large unexcavated valley pueblo. On average Mesa Verde hosts 500,000+ visitors per year. Area residents and visitors enjoy world-class outdoor recreational opportunities including skiing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, camping, hunting, and fishing in the region. Nearby public lands include the San Juan National Forest, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument and other areas in the Tres Rios District of the Bureau of Land Management. The local towns of Cortez, Mancos, Dolores, and Durango provide a range of housing, dining, and shopping opportunities, and both Durango and Cortez have regional airports.
