The Giant Sequoia Forest Fellow is a two-year limited-term position that enhances the capacity of Save the Redwoods Leagues’ Restoration and Science teams’ work in the Giant Sequoia range. Based in Tulare County, the Fellow will support forest restoration monitoring and implementation; support the day-to-day activities of a crew of Apprentices; support Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition outreach efforts; general office and administrative contributions; and other special projects related to Save the Redwoods League’s Mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Forest Restoration Implementation and Monitoring (50%):
- Maintains a regular field-work oriented schedule supporting League Staff and Contractors including the League’s Registered Professional Forester to monitor, coordinate, and support implementation of forest health projects within and adjacent to Giant Sequoia groves.
- Support League project field work including timber cruising, stocking surveys, monitoring plots, GPS data collection, prescribed burning, mechanical equipment coordination, reforestation, and other forest related field work.
- Support League’s Science program through assisting, coordinating and implementing monitoring efforts in the field and data entry/processing.
- Provides logistical support for meetings and events (in-person and virtual) as directed by the Giant Sequoia Stewardship Manager.
- Supports communication and partnership with the U.S. Forest Service through attending and coordinating regular project field site visits and meetings.
Apprenticeship Program Coordination (25%):
- Lead with field supervision and promoting best field safety practices to the Giant Sequoia apprenticeship program (approximately 4-6 apprentices).
- Provides regular field support, coordination, and mentorship to apprenticeship program
- Support apprenticeship recruitment process through attending local career fair, attending interviews, candidate selections, and making presentations at local community colleges.
- Identify and coordinate training and professional development opportunities for the apprenticeship program.
- Consistently follows-up with apprentices to ensure that personnel needs related to safety and other needs are being met.
- Makes recommendations to the League for ways to improve the Giant Sequoia apprenticeship program.
Programmatic support (25%):
- Provide logistical, administrative, and outreach support to Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition as needed.
- Support with processing small contractual documents and invoices.
- Attend annual League events such as All-staff retreat, Programs teams retreat and Wilderness First Aid course.
- Attends and represents Save the Redwoods League at community outreach events, support events by being in person presence and coordinating tabling efforts with agency partners.
- Attends and participates in professional and career development opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-high school degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience and demonstrated interest in environmental conservation and natural resources.
- Experience or classwork in Forestry or natural resource management helpful.
- Ability to work with diverse partners and stakeholders and facilitate productive decision making.
- Ability to think creatively and problem-solve, with a willingness to find innovative solutions.
- Experience driving on rough dirt roads and working or navigating in remote field settings.
- Commitment to the League’s pragmatic, non-confrontational approach to conservation.
- Strong desire to work in a forest health related career.
- Able to work independently as well as in a team, with experience collaborating with others in a complex environment.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including public speaking abilities, required.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office computer programs and general knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinating field-work and daily tasks for Giant Sequoia Apprentices (4-6 crew size).
- Project-based contractor oversight, as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Frequent field travel, predominantly within Western Divide Ranger District of Sequioa National Forest.
- Some weekend and evening responsibilities, including overnight trips.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required.
- Regular field work during operating season (March/April – October/November).
- Frequently required to hike through forest land while working off-site, including walking on uneven ground, climbing over obstacles, and accessing remote locations.
- Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work Schedule:
This role is field based in Giant Sequioia National Monument during the field season (March/April - October/November) and would be home office based in the off season. Field based lodging is available during the field season and the Fellow will have access to U.S. Forest Service office space in Porterville or Springville. This position will travel to the Bay Area for work retreats and meeting son occasion.
Compensation & Benefits:
As a full-time hourly employee, you will be eligible for benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus paid holidays. The organization has a 35 hour work week and the pay for this position is $27.50/hour (annualized ~ $50,000).
