Position Overview
This position as part of the Test Engineering organization will provide comprehensive technical support to Proterra’s Technology Lab and work closely with the Battery Test Engineering team. You will be responsible for supervising a team of test engineering technicians and work with test engineers to plan, build, and execute high voltage battery tests. In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and organized lab space, and support routine equipment maintenance and repairs.
About the Role – You will:
- Work with engineering teams to prioritize and plan safety, reliability, characterization, and compliance tests.
- Manage, train, and mentor a team of test engineering technicians of various backgrounds and skill levels.
- Lead prototype engineering builds of high voltage batteries for test execution in accordance with detailed work instructions or schematics.
- Support the installation of test articles inside environmental chambers, on vibration tables, and on automated test stations in support of safety, reliability, and characterization tests.
- Coordinate test equipment periodic maintenance, repairs, and calibration with the technician team or outside vendors on an as-needed basis.
- Perform safety audits and implement company safety policies for high voltage work and personal protective equipment.
- Develop and champion operational policies and procedures for the test organization that fosters an environment of safety, ownership, and efficiency.
- Ensure all lab areas are maintained, clean, and organized.
- Maintain purchase orders for lab tools, supplies, and consumables.
- Maintain and uphold high safety standards.
- Communicate and work collaboratively with a team of technicians, engineers, program managers, and other site leadership team members.

Your Experience Includes:
- 10+ years of mechanical or electrical technician experience with 4+ years in high voltage battery, automotive, bus or heavy vehicle industries, with a safety-first mentality
- Experience managing a team of technicians in a fast-paced R&D environment
- Experience managing large-scale projects related to facility upgrades, equipment installation, and prototype manufacturing
- Experience with automotive electronic and mechanical systems
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
- Familiarity with web-based platforms such as Jira, Confluence, and Jama
- Experience with electronic testing, measurement and vehicle diagnostic equipment (i.e., Isolation testing, Multi-meter, Oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, etc.)
- Experience with test instrumentation (i.e., acceleration, temperature, flow, pressure, current, voltage).
- Experience setting up, building and repairing industrial equipment such as pumps, fans, chillers, and gears.
- Physical Demands:
- May work various shifts as needed; may be requested to travel to different locations.
- Lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
- Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.
- Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations, depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.
- Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.
- Environmental Demands:
- Ability to work in a test lab environment with varying heat and cold conditions.
- Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.
- Works with irritant chemicals, gases, etc.
Location: Burlingame, CA
Travel: 0 – 10%
Compensation: $110,000 - $125,000/yr
