About Us
South Carolina State University (SCSU) was founded in 1896 as a land-grant college for African-Americans. Since 1966, SCSU has been open to students and faculty of all races, but it has largely retained its mission and character as an historically black institution. The school no longer teaches agriculture, but does offer dozens of other undergraduate and graduate programs to its 5,000 students. The school is home to the only University Transportation Center in South Carolina as well as the only college in the Palmetto State offering a PhD in education.
