About Us

Oakland University is a Michigan public university that serves a student base of more than 18,000. The school offers about 130 baccalaureate degree programs and nearly 100 graduate degree and certificate programs. Oakland University was founded in 1957 by Alfred and Matilda Wilson, who donated $2 million and their 1,500-acre estate to Michigan State University to start a new college in Oakland County. Named Michigan State University Oakland, the college enrolled its first students in 1959. The name changed to Oakland University in 1963.
