About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 36 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

About the Project

This project is supported by the Office of the Provost, Teaching-Learning Enhancement Grants and the Faculty of Arts Endeavour/ Undergraduate Fund. The project was launched in July 2024 and aims to develop an innovative digital learning tool as a sustainable material collections database for interior design products and systems. The goal is to create a database that allows students not only to specify materials for their aesthetic contribution, but also to understand the sustainability properties and performance of these materials and products, as well as their associated health and environmental impact.

About the Bachelor of Interior Design
Interior Design at Mount Royal is a CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) accredited program that offers an innovative, integrated and holistic educational model. Core courses in each semester - Systems, Tools and Design + Precedent engage students through theoretical, functional and professional content that is synchronized for application in Studio. This teaching model reflects/mirrors the integrated, complex nature of interior design practice and requires a high level of collaboration and coordination between faculty members.

About the Net Zero Design Lab

The Net Zero Design Lab is focused on raising awareness about decarbonization, sustainable design, and the circular economy. We provide educational resources and hands-on tool to equip students, faculty, and industry professionals to make informed design choices for a zero-carbon future.

About the Role

The Net Zero Design Lab is seeking applications for the position of Research Assistant, Sustainable Products Design. This is an hourly position working 7.5 hours per week. The project will start immediately upon finding the suitable candidate and will be supervised by Dr. Chi Dara, Assistant Professor, Bachelor of Interior Design, Faculty of Arts.

Responsibilities

Assist in research and development of the digital material learning tool.
Design an interactive Google Slide template for Material Board.
Create and manage visual content of webpages.
Organize and facilitate three (3) student workshops, gathering and analyzing.
Refine digital tool content based on guidance from the Principal Investigator (PI).
Attend bi-weekly meetings with the project team to discuss project updates.

Qualifications

Advanced undergraduate student in 3rd or 4th year of the Interior Design or Faculty of Arts program at MRU, preferred.
Strong interest in sustainable and circular product design.
Proven ability to design data visualizations (course projects accepted).
Proficient in Excel for analyzing datasets.
Intermediate experience in managing web content design and publishing.

Salary: $20.50 per hour
