POSITION SUMMARY:

The position of the Environmental Laborer is a multifunctional position and requires the ability to perform the labor of tree care services for customers, as qualified and directed by management and within safety and policy guidelines. It supports the tree care operations for customers or at the company facilities and yard in various work tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Provides the physical labor work needed for accomplishing tasks, duties and responsibilities in providing tree care services to customers as needed or directed.
Assists with truck preparation to assure that all tools, materials, supplies, and equipment have been included for the day's activity. Assists to ensure all equipment and supplies are properly secured before trucks are moved.
Assists by visually checking tires and other pre-trip inspection items to ensure there are no problems before leaving lot.
Assists Supervisors setting up equipment and tools on projects. Unloads tools as needed.
Ensures assigned truck assigned is cleaned out at the end of the day of all trash and non-essential materials.
Cleans, sharpens, and lubricates tools and equipment. Ensures all tools assigned are returned to designated area daily. Requests new tools and replacements as needed.
Follows all safety rules and company policies and wears PPE appropriate for the work being conducted. Calls a “stop work” should work or environmental conditions become too dangerous for work. Alerts supervisor, manager of such dangers for instructions.
Seeks guidance and direction where needed in the performance of responsibilities and duties.
Reports free time to the Supervisor or Manager and asks for additional assignments.
Assures that equipment in need of repair has been reported and tagged and listed for maintenance.
Operates machinery/vehicles/equipment as qualified. (Stump Grinders, Wood Chippers, Chainsaws, Vehicles, Trucks, etc.)
Ensure toolboxes, storage areas, gates and buildings are locked at end of each day (if you are the last employee to leave).
In conjunction with the company management, shares ideas to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, cost control and safety for this job and associated responsibilities.
Assists and trains others as needed on work methods and other work related skills as needed or requested.
Assists in snow removal operations or yard duties as needed.
Performs all duties in an proper manner with direction from the Supervisor or Manager; consistently showing ability to: recognize and deal with priorities; recognize and perform duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned; make the best use of time by reporting free time and, asking management for additional assignments.
Strives to reach and achieve project committed completion goals on projects.
Demonstrates good judgment and reasoning in investigating and solving problems, in respecting the confidentiality of the company and personnel information.
Works well with and maintains cooperative working relationships with the management, employees and customers.
Consistently shows ability to recognize and deal with priorities and demonstrates ability to handle difficult situations.
Maintains good attendance, reports to work on time and provides proper notification when absence or tardiness is unavoidable.
Strives to improve knowledge in tree care procedures, equipment operation, safety, efficiency and quantity of work.
Maintains a groomed professional appearance appropriate for the position, and in compliance with the company dress code.
Meets regularly with the Operations-Project Manager, and other Management to ensure that stated objectives are adhered to.
Performs other duties and responsibilities required by business conditions or as assigned by Management.

Qualifications

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed at outdoor job-sites, in the company yard and buildings. The position requires travel to customer sites with related exposure to routine hazards such as moving machinery, vehicles, and severe weather conditions. Some prolonged travel and overnight stays may be required. Subject to odors, fumes and substances typically associated with tree care operations and from small gasoline equipment use. Frequent exposure to small cuts, scrapes and abrasions and temperature changes. Subject to varied workloads and must possess ability to work in a busy environment. Must be able to remain calm in emergencies to prevent injuries, maintain safety and assist as needed. Position is considered minimally stressful on an occasional basis.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS

A Driver’s License in good standing is preferred, CDL Preferred.

EXPERIENCE

1 year work experience in the tree service or logging industry or related work is preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

The person in this position must be able to physically labor on work projects using hand and power tools, and equipment such as blowers, rakes, shovels, chippers, chainsaws, pole saws, handsaws, etc. May drive/operate work trucks as qualified.

PHYSICAL

With reasonable accommodation, the individual in this position must be able to perform the following:

Body Positions:

Frequent standing, some sitting (may be longer due to travel to distant worksites).

Body Movement:

Frequent walking, reaching, turning head and torso, bending and flexing legs, arms, wrists and fingers, grasping, stooping, crouching, bending torso and occasional climbing. Must be able to move freely throughout the work sites, frequently lift up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 80 lbs. needed for work operations. Must be able to move throughout the facilities, at customer job-sites, and yard.

Body Senses:

Must be able to hear, see and speak well enough to safely perform the duties of the position and to effectively interact with others. A fear of heights may limit scope of work ability. The sense of touch in fingers and hands is needed in order to safely perform work with equipment and materials.

Manual Dexterity:

Must possess normal balance and coordination adequate to work in tree care labor activities and tasks. Ability to effectively and safely manipulate/set-up/use equipment/ machinery/vehicles required for tree care activities. Must be able to safely and appropriately perform other tasks as trained, within required flexibility, range of motion, coordination of body parts, and ability to transition between positions.

MENTAL

Must be able to speak, read and write in English well enough to read company manuals; and, communicate effectively with employees, customers, and other company related personnel.

Safety:

Must be constantly aware of your surroundings and having the ability to recognize and identify any potential safety hazards/unsafe conditions.

Must have and alertness with the ability to observe and react quickly to falling trees or debris and heavy equipment that is in motion and/or could slide or roll, for instance if on a hill, and while working on raised platforms and at heights (which at times may be extreme heights)

Must be able to quickly and precisely identify potential unsafe acts/conditions and alert others in the area of those hazards

Must be alert and capable of driving a company vehicle and/or heavy equipment while being aware of your surroundings, having the ability to react quickly to unexpected situations, and ensuring the safe operation of the vehicle/equipment to prevent injury to oneself and/or others in and around the vehicle/equipment
