Environmental Health Specialist

Position Summary:

The Environmental Health Specialist provides technical assistance, expertise, and consultation on issues of public health, environmental health, health intervention strategies, and carrying out research and other projects to identify, define, and prevent disability, morbidity, and mortality associated with disease, injury, environmental exposures, and related health issues. Working as a team member, under the direction of the Senior Epidemiologist/Program Director, the Environmental Health Specialist provides assistance and support to Tribal Nations on important environmental health matters. This position coordinates and supports the development of presentations to Tribal Leadership, the public, schools, community groups and organizations, and state and federal groups relevant to Tribal environmental health. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Frequent travel is required to meet the needs of the position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide essential public health services and support to Tribal communities, health departments, and IHS facilities in the Bemidji service area.
Engage in environmental health practices, collaborating with Tribal communities and organizations.
Research and implement evidence-based or promising practices in various environmental health areas.
Serve as a resource for technical information and innovations in environmental health.
Manage and implement environmental health projects, including staff coordination, contract management, and partner collaboration.
Conduct environmental assessments to identify potential health risks and inform decision-making.
Collaborate with emergency preparedness staff to develop and execute weather-related and disaster response plans.
Represent GLITEC on environmental health committees and forums.
Establish and maintain strong working relationships with partners, advisory groups, and committees.
Prepare reports on current and long-range environmental health issues.
Develop and deliver educational presentations and training to raise awareness of environmental health topics.
Secure and manage state and federal grants to support environmental health initiatives.
Ensure projects adhere to timelines, performance standards, and funding agency requirements.
Assist in data collection, management, and analysis to inform decision-making.
Collaborate with state and federal environmental health agencies to coordinate training and initiatives.
Keep Tribal leadership informed of statewide environmental health issues and emerging threats.
Participate in projects assigned by the Program Director and Epidemiology Center Director.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Contribute to grant writing and engage in networking activities to promote services.
Deliver all services in a culturally sensitive manner.
Engage in networking activities to ensure awareness of services.
Attend and coordinate conferences, seminars, and trainings to stay current on environmental health topics and advances.
Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Working Relationships and Scope:

Reports directly to the Senior Epidemiologist/Program Director; works independently with acquired experience. The supervisor assigns specific projects, sets deadlines, and provides assistance/guidance. Planning, coordinating, and execution of work is reviewed for accepted analytical methods, consistency, timeliness, and overall presentation and outcome. Aily contact with assigned program team members. Regular contact with all GLITC Epidemiology Center staff members. Frequent contact with Tribes and Tribal Health Departments to obtain and provide information. Occasional contact with federal and state agencies for purposes of remaining current on various issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience. Required: A bachelor's degree in environmental health science, public health, biology, chemistry, or a related field. Two (2) years of professional experience in environmental health, including project implementation and monitoring. Knowledge of public health principles, including biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, communication, informatics, diversity, culture, biology, evaluation, and systems thinking. Solid knowledge of foundational environmental health principles, including toxicology, microbiology, air quality, water quality, solid waste management, etc. Proficiency in relevant software applications (e.g., GIS, statistical analysis, data management). Familiarity with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and guidelines. Preferred: Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental health, biology, chemistry, public health or related field. Experience working with Native American Tribal Health Departments, Tribal organization, and/or not-for-profit agency. Ability to work independently and as a program team member.

Knowledge of and experience with the Bemidji Area tribal communities and the Tribal health system.
Skill in promoting professionalism, harmony, and effective communication in a culturally diverse environment.
Proficiency in operating standard computer equipment and utilizing various software applications.
Effective written and oral communication in English.
Ability to compose complex business correspondence (reports, health profiles).
Capable of representing GLITEC/GLITC professionally at local, state, tribal, or federal government functions.
Adept at working effectively under pressure and managing time efficiently.
Skilled in addressing a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
Ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers.
Experienced in interacting professionally with a wide variety of people and speaking in front of groups.
Proficient in applying statistical calculations to findings.
This position requires a high level of confidentiality. Individuals must possess a valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and the ability to travel.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed mainly in an office environment with minimal exposure to injury. Regular work hours are normally Monday through Friday, with a minimum of 40 hours per week. There will be some variation in working hours and demand due to special projects, deadlines, travel, and other concerns. The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.
Frequent travel is required.
GLITC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
Working within sites or disaster areas where potentially dangerous and unpredictable conditions may exist.

This is a full-time exempt opportunity working Monday through Friday, 40 hours plus per week. This position is located in our Minneapolis, Minnesota office. This is not a remote position. The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually with benefits including: Annual/Personal Leave and Holiday Pay; Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA and 401(k) Retirement Plan.
