Job Description

Great Basin College (GBC) invites applications for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to join our team. This full-time, A contract administrative faculty position is based on GBC’s main campus in Elko, Nevada, and reports to the Director of Facilities Operations.

As the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, you will play a key role in developing and overseeing the college's environmental health, safety, and hazard control programs. You will ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including those of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), state, local, and federal laws. You will also be responsible for providing training, conducting safety inspections and audits, maintaining records, preparing reports, and assisting with budgeting and financial planning for the safety programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and implement safety programs in compliance with OSHA, EPA, UFC, and other relevant regulations.
Design and deliver safety and environmental training to faculty, staff, and students.
Oversee safety programs for hazardous materials, waste management, environmental protection, and emergency planning in coordination with UNR Public Safety.
Investigate incidents and accidents, identify hazards, and develop prevention programs.
Conduct inspections of campus facilities and work with the Director of Facilities Operations to monitor safety standards.
Manage state permits for hazardous materials and oversee their proper disposal.
Attend and participate in safety meetings with NSHE and other relevant organizations.
Provide safety expertise for campus events and assist with event setup and cleanup.
Respond to internal and external requests related to environmental health and safety matters.
Assist with the budgeting and funding needs for the environmental health and safety programs.
Available for after-hours call-out and coverage on a rotational basis.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational safety, or health sciences).
Three years of technical experience in environmental health and safety program management (e.g., environmental compliance, fire-life safety, occupational safety, hazardous materials).
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience to meet the job's essential duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience in a higher education setting, including managing multiple sites.
Certifications in safety-related fields (e.g., Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response).
EMS certification (or willingness to obtain certification within the first few months of employment) at the First Aid/CPR level.
Current OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper certification or willingness to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

Travel

The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.

Compensation Grade

Administrative Faculty – C

The budgeted salary range for this position is $59,186 - $73,500 Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Work Schedule:

A Contract - Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (with some flexibility/alternate hours) possible need for occasional evenings and/or Saturdays based on organizational needs.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner.
