PURPOSE: The Director – Sustainability will lead our Sustainability program; including ensuring a Sustainability strategy that aligns with our core business strategy and purpose, Operating at a Higher Standard to Build a Better World. The role will develop plans for sustainability-related initiatives such as GHG reduction, water management, waste reduction, and increasing our investment in sustainable products and technologies. The Director –Sustainability will also lead cross-functional governance committees and teams that are structured to drive implementation of action plans across the enterprise and help business leaders understand emerging changes in external expectations.
JOB DESCRIPTION (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES):
- Drive the company’s sustainability program. Formulate action plans with defined objectives, targets and responsibilities to support agreed upon sustainability strategies. This includes the integration of sustainability into core processes and decision-making.
- Ensure appropriate internal controls and measurement systems are in place to support sustainability efforts. Measure and monitor progress against sustainability strategies, objectives and performance targets.
- Assess the organization’s current sustainability performance and identify and prioritize the organization’s key sustainability issues.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders (i.e.: Investor Relations, Operations, Engineering/R&D, Supply Management, HR, EHS&S, etc.) to successfully develop and execute coordinated short- and long-term sustainability plans. This includes helping build sustainability principles into short and long-range business planning, capital planning and operations planning.
- Lead the interface on all government and ratings agency submissions on sustainability related matters. Collaborate closely with internal subject matter experts (i.e.: Investor Relations, Operations, Engineering/R&D, Supply Management, HR, EHS&S, etc.) to ensure appropriate responses and communications.
- Identify and prioritize areas for institutional sustainability efforts and recommend strategies for proactively addressing relevant sustainability issues. This includes identifying and addressing areas of concern regarding potential liabilities and risk (brand and reputation, errors and omissions, etc.).
- Consistently demonstrate subject matter expertise on the governance structures, policies and processes needed to address key topics under the Sustainability/ESG umbrella, including sustainable procurement, climate change, business ethics, and human rights.
- In collaboration with Legal and Compliance, assure that all Sustainability initiatives are in alignment with the company’s broader Enterprise Risk Management program.
- Conceptualize and execute strategic, integrated communications campaigns that build awareness and proven execution of the company’s sustainability strategy, as well as inform and excite key stakeholders (current and future employees, customers/business leaders, ecosystem partners, influencers/thought leaders, policymakers, investors and the media). This includes building effective partnerships with external organizations to support sustainability efforts.
- Develop a disclosure strategy that facilitates data integrity and assurance, as well as satisfies global regulatory mandates and relevant voluntary initiatives.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as needed or directed in support of the Company’s 2030 Strategy.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum education: BS in Business, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability or a related field;
- Preferred education: MS or Professional Degree in Business, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy or Law, Sustainability or related field
- At least 10 years or more of related experience in an industrial segment.
- Strong understanding of Environmental and Sustainability practices with a working knowledge of principles affecting business development and growth.
- Experience working in a global and matrixed organization with the ability to work with many different cultures and languages.
- Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated through interactions with teams, business leaders, governmental agencies and third parties.
- Strong leadership/management skills, including high integrity and business acumen.
- Ability to engage proactively, influence and interact effectively with colleagues, senior management, third parties, etc. demonstrating Lincoln’s values and expectations and business-partner capabilities.
- A self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team and to manage numerous matters and competing priorities effectively.
