Job Overview:
As an Environmental Scientist – Contaminated Sites, you will be part of our Brownfield Assessment & Development providing environmental site assessment (ESA), remediation and re-development services for clients throughout Western Canada. This position focuses on the execution of excellent project management services and contributes to the mentorship and development of junior staff. The incumbent will build on MEMS experienced and technically strong teams to successfully execute medium to high complexity work plans. This incumbent can manage multiple work scopes or projects in alignment with MEMS’ overall corporate strategy. This position is full time and requires a combination of office and fieldwork.
As an Environmental Scientist – Contaminated Sites, you will be responsible for:
Portfolio and Client Management
- Contributing, implementing, and maintaining client business growth plans to create conditions that result in long-term repeat business.
- Managing diverse clients and portfolios of projects.
- Developing and maintaining direct contact with clients and stakeholders.
- Communicating client intel to management/executive and working to develop appropriate responses.
- Working with the Business Development team by facilitating opportunities for networking, meeting with potential clients, and providing client intelligence and technical resources to support business development activities.
Technical Engagement
- Providing technical direction and mentorship regarding the execution of assessment and risk projects, including: file reviews, compilation of complex data sets, development of conceptual site models, and development of creative solutions/risk-based recommendations to manage challenge contaminated sites.
- Developing technical resources and utilizing training to improve internal aspects of the discipline.
- Completing senior review and providing technical direction in the preparation of proposals and work scope for assessment and risk projects.
- Taking on a leading technical role in risk assessment projects for complex sites.
- Providing technical review and signing off on reports prepared by other assessment and risk project staff
Mentorship and Training
- Identifying competency gaps within the discipline and assisting in the coordination of required training.
- Contributing to the development and evolution of mentorship and competency training programs
- Collaborating internally with the executive team, Employee Resources Group, and service group directors to develop effective service group teams
- Provide direct mentorship of staff; and
- Other duties as required
What You Bring:
- A minimum of 8-10 years of directly related experience in executing and managing site assessments and reclamation
- A bachelor’s degree or diploma in environmental sciences, engineering, or similar
- Eligibility for membership in a professional organization such as AIA, ASPB, or APEGA/EGBC.
- An understanding of the Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Risk Assessment guidance documents and/or equivalent documents from other jurisdictions as required.
- A service-oriented attitude with a desire to provide innovative environmental solutions to complex client sites.
- Drive to adapt new technologies to carry out environmental investigations.
- Motivation to learn and constantly improve processes and tools.
- Clear effective communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license and a willingness to travel as required.
