Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

CFS is seeking a motivated Quality Control Engineer to oversee the quality conformance and receipt of highly engineered hardware for the SPARC project. This role requires close collaboration with a talented cross-functional team, including supply chain, manufacturing, design, and R&D, to ensure that all design requirements are met for incoming and vendor-built components and systems.

The ideal candidate will excel in cross-functional communication and be operationally adept at quickly identifying and escalating failures and non-conformances to relevant stakeholders, driving them to resolution. The candidate should have a strong technical background and be proactive in working across departments to establish and maintain robust processes and systems.

This team member will:

    • Oversee the quality conformance verification of incoming components to ensure alignment with engineering design specifications
    • Analyze and approve documentation for incoming components, confirming all design requirements are comprehensively met
    • Lead the identification and resolution of non-conformances in incoming components by implementing rigorous engineering solutions and process improvements
    • Manage the Material Review Board (MRB) process, focusing on engineering assessments and documentation integrity for non-conforming components
    • Collaborate with supply chain, manufacturing, and R&D teams to refine quality control processes and ensure robust engineering standards are applied
    • Develop and implement strategic quality assurance protocols to enhance system-level conformance with project specifications

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • BS in engineering, science, or mathematics
    • 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing or laboratory setting
    • Data analysis and basic statistics knowledge
    • Knowledge of non-conformance management
    • Experience presenting technical information to a broad audience
    • Python, C++, or similar programming experience
    • Tableau, Power BI or similar data visualization experience
    • Use of an ERP system for inventory movements
    • Knowledge of basic quality systems requirements
    • Ability to utilize Atlassian productivity tools (Jira, Confluence)

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

    • Mechanical inspection experience
    • Experience using statistical tools
    • Knowledge of engineering drawings GD&T principles
    • Knowledge of machining and welding processes
    • Experience implementing procedures and work instructions in a manufacturing setting
    • Programming and data analytics experience
    • Experience creating data visualizations
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
    • Perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
    • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
    • Willingness to travel occasionally or do required nights/weekends/on-call
    • #LI-Onsite
