Overview
Lightship is the first American all-electric recreational vehicle manufacturer currently developing an aerodynamic, battery-powered trailer for the electric age. As the macro transition to an all-electric transportation ecosystem accelerates, Lightship is bringing the increased convenience and superior performance that electrification offers to a pastime enjoyed by over 11 million American families.

Honoring Diverse Perspectives
Lightship is committed to hiring and developing top talent from diverse backgrounds. We believe representing and supporting diverse groups is key to the success of our team members, customers, shareholders and the achievement of our mission and vision. We operate in a collaborative environment with a flat organizational structure and expect a high degree of integrity, autonomy and creativity from all members of the team.

About the Role
As a mechanical design engineering intern you will be the understudy of the full-time mechanical design engineers, working with them on all tasks related to scoping, design, optimization, testing, and manufacturing a world class power system. This includes working with high voltage battery packs, power electronics, electric propulsion systems, and solar arrays.

Responsibilities

    • Assist with creation of CAD models for the RV power system. This includes mechanical packaging of sourced components, routing of HV cabling and LV communication harnesses, creation of custom designed enclosures, selection of off the shelf components such as connectors, seals, fasteners and plumbing of thermal management systems
    • Analysis of components for stress/deflection, thermal properties, and electrical characteristics
    • Set up and run engineering experiments, including functional testing, safety tests, characterization tests, and field tests
    • Help with troubleshooting and failure analysis of components
    • Fabricate prototype parts and test articles, including beta vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

    • Pursuing BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
    • Rising Senior or greater, graduating pending 2025
    • Experience with CAD program and design of custom components (CATIA experience a plus)
    • Experience with spec’ing and selection of off the shelf components, such as electrical connectors, actuators, seals, fasteners, switches, etc
    • Experience with prototype fabrication equipment and processes e.g.:  lathe, mill, drill press, 3d printer etc

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience creating and using wiring diagrams
    • Experience with data acquisition systems and CAN control GUIs
    • Experience with design and testing of electric vehicle powertrain components such as HV batteries, inverters, chargers, DC-DC converters, and electric motors
    • Experience with solar array design and integration
    • Experience designing mechanical structures, including composites and weldments
    • Experience with performing analyses using finite element method for linear elastic structural, thermal conduction, and combined CFD/thermal convection problems
