Job Description

  1. Background

SNV Zambia is a non-profit organization operating across nine provinces in Zambia with offices in Lusaka, Chipata, Choma, Kabwe, Kasama, Mongu, and Kalomo. The organization is committed to providing a clean, hygienic, and safe working environment for its staff and visitors. To achieve this, SNV Zambia is seeking the services of a professional cleaning company to provide comprehensive cleaning services for its offices in Lusaka, Choma, Chipata, Kabwe, and Kasama.

  1. Objectives

This is the Procurement of the complete sets of surface solar water pumps, complete set submersible solar water pumps, fencing game wire, drip irrigation tapes, future pumps, shed nets and polythene pots, which will be distributed to selected farmer groups who have already existing underground and surface water bodies. The materials will also be used to establish irrigation schemes where about 40 to 50 farmers will benefit per scheme. The key objectives are:

  1. To create/establish climate smart learning sites/centres for improved and increased crop productivity and increased income whilst laying foundations for INCREASE Project phase II.
  2. Establish irrigation schemes where more farmers will be able to benefit and help them produce throughout the year to increase farmers’ productivity, yields, food security and incomes.
  3. The schemes will also help to strengthen farmers’ organisations, private sector, and small businesses in climate-smart supply chains since farmers will be requiring the same inputs throughout the year.
  4. The initiative will also help to scale-up climate smart practices through effective collaborations and stronger multistakeholder forums. This is because key line ministries will be involved in the implementation process and encourage farmers to take farming as a real business.

These activities will be conducted in eastern province in Katete, Chipata, Lumezi, and Lundazi districts targeting small holder farmers. The climate smart agricultural practices promotion in the same sites will be the major focus area and farmers within the same communities will be actively involved to have a practical experience on what is being promoted by the project.

The plan is to use these sites/centres as learning hubs through farmer field schools, field days/ exchange and learning tours so that more small holder farmers can be exposed and be able to appreciate and adopt the technologies being promoted.

  1.  Scope of Services
  1. Procurement.

The procurement will be for the following items: complete sets of surface solar water pumps, complete set submersible solar water pumps, fencing game wire, drip irrigation tapes, future pumps, shed nets and polythene pots to be distributed to selected farmer groups as learning centres.

  1. Irrigation sites

The sites have been identified where the irrigation schemes can be established with already existing dams, and these will be good foundations for phase II. These sites are in Katete, Chipata, Chipata and Lundazi.

The sites have functional dams which are currently not in use for agricultural activities. After consultation with ministry of agriculture together with technical service branch (TSB), it was agreed that the dams can be used for agricultural activities for the small holder farmers living within the communities. The dams have arable land of more than 5has each site but on average 5ha can be used as an irrigation scheme n each site. This will result to 50 farmers to benefit from the scheme at a time for a period to be agreed for that famer to use the scheme whilst investing into his/her own irrigation system. The requirement for these schemes will be solar water pump, drip irrigation kits, water tanks, polypipes and game wire to protect the sites from livestock.  Once the schemes are established, the total of 200 farmers will be able to benefit and grow various crops throughout the year which is in line with government program to promote winter maize production to increase food security at household level. The beneficiaries will be weaned after a period of two years so that new farmers could be engaged as well.

  1. Community tree nursery sites.

There are already several existing agroforestry tree nursery sites which needs support to promote agroforestry. The community tree nursery support will be an important activity to be considered in preparation for phase II. Strengthening community tree nursery establishment will help to create sense of ownership amongst the smallholder farmers in the project operational areas. It will also encourage them to take care of the trees and increase adoption of the agroforestry which is one of the key areas in climate smart agricultural practices and have been identified in 12 sites. This approach will also help to cut on the transportation cost for the tree seedlings since the nurseries will be raised in the communities where the beneficiaries are located. The materials required include shed nets and polythene plastics for both fertilizer and fruit trees.

  1. Time frame for this procurement

Timely procurement of the requested materials/resources will be of great importance. This activity is expected to be implemented expected to commence soon the equipment’s are procured.
