Job Description
As a Regional Sustainability Manager in the Communications function, you collaborate with the brand’s global sustainability team to adapt strategies to the local market context. You act as advisor to senior leadership, championing sustainability as a lever for business growth across the company. Together with the Regional organization, you ensure sustainability becomes a natural part of every function, while the relevant stakeholders, consumers, customers, and employees perceive H&M as a purpose-driven business. You serve as spokesperson for key sustainability topics and drive local partnerships and initiatives to further awareness of H&M’s actions around circularity. You also oversee the company’s philanthropic efforts in the region.
This hybrid role reports into our Head of PR & Communications and is based out of New York, NY, with the following direct reports: Sustainability Leads.
A Day in the Life
Working at H&M means no two days are ever the same, but a typical day will include the following responsibilities*
Build and implement local sustainability strategies that improve brand perception internally and externally
Adapt global program and communications for the audience in Region Americas based on relevant market knowledge and data
Act as local Sustainability Ambassador to global sustainability team
Partner with Region Americas management team to set short and long-term strategies to ensure H&M is positioned as a company at the forefront of sustainability by consumers and key stakeholders and mitigate potential risks
Partner with Communications and Marketing functions on sustainability Influencer engagement
Approach sustainability efforts as a commercial tool to drive progress across the business
Manage the Region Americas philanthropic strategy, overseeing the company’s donations and related partnerships
Activate local environmental sustainability programs like garment collecting and build effective partnerships with external organizations to support CSR and corporate citizenship efforts
Work with internal stakeholders (such as supply chain, logistics) to support co-creation of strategies to reduce energy usage and CO2e emissions
Work together with Public Affairs to track and implement legal sustainability requirements for the business
Strategically act as sustainability ambassador to industry organizations (AAFA, NRF, RILA, CCTC, etc.)
Act as external spokesperson for relevant news, panels, collections, etc.
Track analytics including garment collecting metrics and logistics emissions
Identify innovative market activities to drive sales through environmental and social sustainability and partner with key sustainability influencers
Counsel senior leads on business and consumer impacts of sustainability and corporate citizenship actions, enabling them to drive decisions
Required domestic and international travel up to 40% of time
Qualifications
Who You Are:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or related field
8-10 years’ experience in sustainability, public affairs, or corporate communications
Deep understanding of complex environmental sustainability landscape including evolving innovations and industry news
Exceptional, communicator with the ability to negotiate, persuade and counsel internal and external stakeholders ranging from employees to press and consumers
Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and staff
Strong brand ambassador, spokesperson, and leader
Proven strategic planning ability
Creative thinker with ideas on how to constantly improve programs and create positive impact
Subject matter-expert who can provide leadership, education, and guidance through shared H&M values
Able to work independently and be self-motivated while still working within a team environment and fostering a strong team collaboration
Inclusive, positive, open to feedback, willing to multitask and learn on the job

Compensation: salary range is $125,822-$144,699 annually**
