Sustainability/ Pollution Prevention Coordinator

Roles and Responsibilities

The Sustainability/ Pollution Prevention (P2) Coordinator supports the Environmental Management System (EMS) program through the implementation of the WIPP Pollution Prevention Program and the WIPP Sustainable Procurement Plan. The role is responsible for the authoring and completion of various reports to the DOE and stakeholders.

The Sustainability/P2 Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s Environmental Management System Coordinator and Energy Manager to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives to reduce the site’s impact on the environment. Responsibilities include educating the WIPP site community about sustainability and coordinating site communication and activities related to sustainability, maintaining compliance with changing sustainability-related regulations/requirements, and annual reporting.

Job Duties include:

  • Implement the WIPP Pollution Prevention Program at the WIPP site.
      • Develop the annual fiscal year Waste Minimization Report
      • Coordinate and schedule vendor pick-up of recyclable materials such as wood, metal, etc.
      • Identify new recycling pathways for continual improvement of WIPP’s environmental performance.
  • Implement the WIPP Sustainable Procurement Plan in collaboration with representatives from the Procurement organization.
      • Review site purchase Requisitions and Non-Sustainable Justification Forms for environmental sustainability compliance.
      • Research products and necessary compliance requirements using the SFTool, SFTool.ecomedes, EPA and other government agency sites: BioPrefered, BioBased, CPG, Safer Choice, SNAP, EPEAT, ENERGY STAR, FEMP and other Eco labels.
  • Contribute program-specific data and narrative for the annual fiscal year Site Sustainability Plan to include Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Acquisition efforts on site.
  • Develop training and awareness materials to ensure site personnel are aware and compliant with applicable requirements with regard to Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Acquisition programs and maintain applicable procedures.
  • Participate in DOE HQ Sustainability data calls and working groups.
  • Implement applicable regulatory requirements through effective collaboration with responsible organizations.
  • Assist the EMS Coordinator with awareness-related activities, such as Earth Day celebrations and site-wide cleanups.
  • Work with WIPP personnel and stakeholders to promote an understanding and awareness of sustainability issues by coordinating informational communications, training and presentations where applicable. Topics should cover the various Department of Energy’s Sustainability Goals, which include, but are not limited to, energy and water conservation, waste minimization, recycling, sustainable building and landscape design, sustainable procurement, carbon pollution-free electricity and site resilience.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal sustainability training, programming, and guides to ensure WIPP personnel are aware of sustainability-related requirements and expectations while supporting the DOE mission. This includes material related to climate literacy.
    • Creates educational material by writing, editing, and designing content for communication pieces, fliers, bulletin board displays, newsletters, sustainability guides, celebrations and training materials.
  • Develop and maintain the WIPP site’s sustainability website to include information highlighting sustainability actions occurring at the site and applicable resources for site personnel.
  • Interface with DOE regarding status of implementation efforts of various sustainability initiatives (DOE Sustainability Plan) and expectations through annual reporting (Site Sustainability Plan, Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Plan), periodic meetings, and data requests as necessary.
  • Assist the EMS Coordinator and site Energy Manager in defining sustainability goals and track performance metrics to assess program effectiveness.
  • Improve the effectiveness of the WIPP site’s sustainability practices by monitoring best practices related to sustainability through benchmarking and other forms of performance tracking and makes recommendations for needed modifications to ensure continual improvement.
  • Support WIPP site departments as appropriate in relation to implementing sustainability program requirements (set forth by the current Administration and DOE) and associated projects relevant to DOE’s Sustainability Goals.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed, as well as staying current in changing sustainability requirements and regulations.

Skills: The WIPP site is requesting someone with effective verbal and written communication skills. The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other individuals and project groups will be necessary and is highly encouraged. Likewise, the ability to use standard Microsoft Office applications to prepare Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and reports and/or briefings to accurately track sustainability-related progress is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of varying departments site-wide is expected.

Exempt Salary Grade (30-32)

Minimum Qualifications: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and applications are the means of determination.

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Two years of experience developing, maintaining, and/or managing sustainability-based initiatives, processes, or programs involving the collection, analysis, and reporting of program data is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Higher education attainment than listed acceptable per internal level identifiers of accompanying years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an environmentally-related discipline, such as physical, biological, health sciences, natural resource management, engineering, sustainability or an appropriately related field is preferred.
  • Experience working with sustainability or environmental programs in a government facility is preferred.

Minimum salary $78,719 per year - Base salary will be increased dependent upon candidate's background (i.e. education and experience)
