VOLUNTEER AND EVENTS SPECIALIST

REPORTS TO: Marketing Manager
SEASONAL OR NON-SEASONAL: Non-Seasonal, Benefited
FLSA STATUS:  Full-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt 

POSITION SUMMARY:  Assist the zoo to accomplish its mission through the development, organization and execution of the zoo’s volunteer program, including recruitment, training, project oversight, and all other aspects as they relate to volunteerism. This position works closely with all other zoo departments to organize and execute fundraising events throughout the season. This position also supports the marketing and graphics department with various tasks including but not limited to social media content creation.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education and / or experience in organizing events and volunteer work, Marketing, Digital Media, Social Media Management, or related field.
  • Possess a keen attention to detail, adaptive eye, and a clear understanding of the principles and elements of design.
  • Ability to organize and manage zoo events.
  • Ability to recruit, lead, and motivate volunteers when needed for events and / or special projects for other departments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Proficient using various software tools like Canva, Constant Contact, Monday.com
  • Able to use a large format printer, laminator, copy machine, digital camera, and video camera.
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and working in a fast-paced setting.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing assignments, environment and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently to plan, organize and handle multiple tasks as necessary.
  • Able to build and maintain meaningful business relationships.
  • Able to absorb and apply constructive criticism.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with zoo staff to develop, create and maintain directional, informational, educational and event graphics for print, digital and social media, at exhibits and in the park.
  • Track, measure and report analytics from website traffic, social media and digital campaigns.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Collaborate on the creation and scheduling of social media posts, events and video.
  • Collaborate on special event planning to ensure a positive guest experience and successful results.
  • Capture photographic and video graphic images of animals, guests, special events, programs, etc. in the park as needed.
  • Organize and secure storage of the zoo’s library of digital photo images, video and graphic files.
  • Maintain department equipment, tools and technology.
  • Communicate and relate positively with team members, other supervisors and their staff, vendors, volunteers and guests.
  • Communication with the Marketing Manager and other department managers to relay information, important facts, and ideas that affect other staff, the zoo’s operation or guest experiences.
  • Cultivate the current adult volunteer program to support operations, supplement resources and provide recognition of services donated.  Maintain and record all volunteer hours.
  • Work with department managers to plan, establish goals, develop and implement volunteer programming throughout the organization.  Recruit, train and schedule zoo volunteers based on current needs.
  • Ability to relate positively and respectfully at all times with diverse groups of people including volunteers, co-workers, guests, contractors, vendors, and other departments or companies within the zoo.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
 
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assisting staff in emergencies as necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.
  • Participates and assists in team oriented zoo projects as needed including events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned throughout the zoo.
                                                                                             
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
  • Able to work outdoors and on various terrains in all weather conditions.
  • Able to climb and stand on various types of ladders without supervision.
  • Able to use various tools (drills, saws, hammers) without supervision to install/remove signs, banners.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, holidays and special events as needed.
  • Able to read, speak, and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.
  • Able to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently throughout the day.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds at times, not repetitively.
  • Able to drive motor vehicles such as a golf cart.
