Job Description

Purpose

The Battery department is responsible for providing testing services for Battery/Module/Cell, including performance, life cycle, durability, abuse, and strip and rate.

This role is to carry out all types of Battery testing (including Performance, life cycle, durability, safety, abuse and environmental), working within a team of engineers and technicians to co-ordinate and deliver test activities. The successful applicant will be expected to ensure tests are correctly performed in conformance with various international and customer standards including robust recording and reporting. 

Close and constructive interaction with customers is required to ensure all activities which are conducted meet their respective specifications and deliver the required information in a timely manner.

This role will provide the successful applicant with scope for further development in technical aspects such as problem solving, diagnostic skills, analysis and data presentation, as well as participation in the continuous development of processes and facilities, both technological and operational, within the Battery test department. UTAC are a keen supporter of personal development, including supporting individuals in accreditation as Incorporated or Chartered engineers.

Responsibilities

The successful role holder will be responsible for liaising with customers to establish testing requirements and to ensure tests are prepared, executed, clearly and completely documented and reported to the highest standards, on time and within budget.

  • Establish test content including review and inclusion of any regulatory requirements. 
  • Prepare internal test execution documentation.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety and quality procedures are adhered to.
  • Development of Risk Assessments, supporting the strong culture of safe working.
  • Programming of test equipment.
  • Undertake analysis of results, including statements of conformity or engineering observations and interpretations.
  • Apply continuous improvement methods to activities and facilities to ensure ever improving processes and test methods.
  • Work in accordance with and support the creation of new and existing processes and procedures
  • Working in accordance with ISO 17025.
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC staff at all times.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Degree or equivalent in technical/electrical disciplines

Experience 

  • Minimum of 2 years hands on experience performing tests within a lab or workshop environment, or working in the design and development of batteries, especially those containing lithium (Desirable).
  • Working with electric vehicles or sub-systems or other relevant HV systems (Desirable).
  • Experienced of CAN (Desirable).
  • Development and commissioning of test rigs and apparatus. 
  • A clear understanding and ability to assess relevant health and safety risks.
  • Selection and application of various types of instrumentation and of data acquisition systems.
  • Practiced in data analysis and presentation.
  • Writing of technical reports.
  • Understanding of relevant international standards, in particular UN/ECE Reg. 100, Reg 132 and “38.3” for batteries and  Quality assurance, particularly ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 (Beneficial).

Skills 

  • Sound, practical understanding of electrical principles and battery fundamentals, particularly in regard to relevant safety aspects.
  • Programming of automation or software controlled applications
  • Ability to utilize HV diagnostic tools such as multi meters, oscilloscopes and clamp meters with best safety practices
  • Able to convey work instructions and test outcomes, both verbally and written
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Data analysis, interpretation and presentation
  • Rig design using Solidworks or similar CAD packages (Preferred)
  • Experienced using Canalyzer (Desirable)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Full UK driving licence & own transport (UTAC is not easily assessable via public transport)

  • NOTE: This position be will based on site at Millbrook, Bedford
