Job Description

We are looking for an Environmental Engineer or Scientist to support environmental compliance and sustainability programs for our manufacturing organization in North America. The Environmental Engineer/Scientist will report directly to the Director of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability and will be tasked with the following duties:

  • Work with project teams and plant personnel across our exterior building products manufacturing segments to ensure environmental compliance at new and existing facilities, including oversight and technical/regulatory support for air, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, spill prevention and emergency response regulatory activities
  • Engender teambuilding, collaboration, and customer service with internal business partners (including operations leaders, plant managers and local EHS staff) throughout the manufacturing organization on environmental compliance matters
  • Prepare applicable environmental permit applications for new or modified manufacturing operations and processes. Prepare environmental permit renewal applications for expiring permits
  • Prepare or oversee the submittal of periodic state and EPA periodic regulatory submittals in the US and Canada (e.g., emissions inventories, TRIs, Tier 2s, NPRI, RMPs, wastewater/stormwater DMRs and hazardous waste reports).
  • Prepare and maintain applicable environmental documents for facilities, including stormwater, SPCC, and waste minimization
  • Assist with implementation and oversight of our enterprise-wide environmental management system (EMS), including tracking and providing support to close compliance tasks
  • Manage and analyze enterprise environmental ESG systems and data metrics for internal use and external reporting
  • Lead and manage internal facility compliance audits to measure conformance to CBB policy and procedures and work closely with leadership to identify corrective actions
  • Lead or participate in environmental incident investigations as a team member and subject matter expert to identify root causes and effective corrective actions
  • Support plants with interactions with regulatory agencies during inspections, releases or spills, and other environmental events, including developing responses to notices of violation or other non-compliance events
  • Manage the projects, tasks, and activities of contracted environmental consulting firms
  • Coordinate environmental training programs to meet plant needs.
  • Act as an environmental subject matter expert, responding to questions from plants and other stakeholders
  • Keep abreast of newly promulgated state and federal environmental regulations applicable to our manufacturing operations
  • Mentor EHS professionals on environmental matters

Qualifications

  • An Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university
  • A minimum of 10 years of manufacturing or environmental compliance consulting experience is required
  • Experience working within or providing support services for manufacturing organizations
  • The ability to read and grasp technical documents; environmental regulations, policy and guidance; and mathematical calculations
  • Proven project management experience is a plus
  • Direct hands-on experience with (or a comfortable working knowledge of) air quality rules and NSR/Title V permitting; NPDES/storm water permitting and reporting; and RCRA/DOT/SPCC/EPCRA rules
  • Must be positive, self-motivated, flexible, energetic and ethical; enjoy challenges and problem-solving; and can efficiently manage workflow, schedules and deadlines across multiple projects
  • Must have effective communication skills, be customer-focused, and can work with people of diverse backgrounds and personalities, from senior management to the plant floor
  • Spanish language skills are a plus
  • Proficiency with Excel and large data files is required
  • Ability to travel overnight 30-50 percent
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to engender trust and build positive working relationships
  • Demonstrated openness to change and adaptability
