SMG is seeking an Environmental Coordinator in the Abilene, TX area – Utilities


The key function of an Environmental Coordinator is to put the environment at the forefront of their job, prioritize the client’s needs, work well in a team setting, be self-managed, and be flexible when it comes to change. The Associate in this role will be working in a utility construction environment.


Overview of Job Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental site investigations for property purchases, leases, and sales. In some cases, also arrange for Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments using an approved environmental contractor
  • Perform pre-excavation assessments (including sampling) in stations and at T-Line tower locations where construction activities will occur, and assist with disposal arrangements when materials must be disposed of off-site
  • Perform or arrange for environmental sampling at construction sites. This work could include sampling for PCBs, TPH, metals, and other hazardous substances
  • Arrange for used oil and electrical equipment disposal from stations, sometimes in conjunction with company-specific Asset Recovery
  • Provide oversight and arrange for the disposal of contaminated soil, concrete, groundwater, and other hazardous wastes from construction or demolition sites. This includes characterizing the wastes, overseeing waste shipments, and ensuring that shipment documents are correctly signed and returned by the vendor promptly
  • Perform Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) surveys of new stations and modifications made to existing stations, and file the necessary paperwork
  • Arrange for asbestos surveys and waste disposal, oversee building inspections, and coordinate notifications for asbestos abatement projects
  • Assist with the demolition of existing and newly acquired structures. This work may involve obtaining quotes, preparing Work Authorizations, providing oversight, coordinating regulatory notifications, collection and disposal of hazardous wastes, and closure of site wells and/or septic systems
  • Assist Transmission and its contractors, as needed, in cleaning up and reporting spills that occur at construction sites involving equipment and machinery
  • Assist the team with maintaining up-to-date records of hazardous chemicals at construction sites and filing the necessary notifications with state, county, and local agencies
Requirements
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of environmental experience
  • 3+ years of relevant environmental experience
  • A degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field is preferred

Experience preferred in the following areas

  • Working around construction on utility projects
  • Record keeping and filing of spills and environmental hazards
  • Possess good time management skills due to numerous locations needing support

Physical Demands of the job may include

  • Moving about long distances
  • Ascending/descending stairs and ladders
  • Remaining in a stationary position for a prolonged period
  • Working in extreme weather (hot and cold Environments)
  • Being exposed to loud noises
  • Wearing personal protective gear correctly
