Environmental Scientist/Staff Geologist - San Antonio, TX
 
Halff is seeking a 5-10 year experienced, highly motivated environmental professional with a Bachelor of Science in geology, chemistry, environmental science, or related degree for hire in our San Antonio and Richardson offices.  This position would be part of a very skilled team that works closely with Project Managers and other Technical Leads performing due diligence, remediation, compliance, permitting, and other environmental sampling activities.  This mid-level position will be responsible for completing and providing oversight field investigation activities, serving as the Site-Safety and Health Officer during field investigation activities completed at Federal facilities/installations, training junior staff in standard operating procedures (SOPs) during field activities, conducting/reviewing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, completing compliance inspections/sampling, preparing reports, and overall support of the environmental department with potential for growth into a project management role.  This position will include opportunities for both field and office work.  It may also involve extensive travel and several days in the field away from home. Environmental Scientist/Staff Geologist Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Travel may be required, up to 30% annually (travel throughout Texas and surrounding states). Travel for more than 7 consecutive days at a time may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Provide technical support on environmental projects. Conducting field investigations/assessments and collecting project related data for analysis.
  • Preparing and review of environmental reports and studies (e.g., Phase I, Phase II).
  • TCEQ TRRP reporting experience required.
  • Conduct field work including various multimedia sampling (surface water, sediment, soil, groundwater, soil gas, air, etc.). Preparing Regulatory submissions.
  • Conduct aquifer testing, water level measurements, and elevation surveying.
  • Reviewing and validation of laboratory analytical data, using federal or state guidelines for insertion into technical reports. 
  • Data interpretation and presentation including tables and GIS figures to illustrate collected data.
  • Writing technical reports that summarize field events, laboratory analytical methods, data results, conclusions, and recommendations.  
  • Scheduling and oversight of utility locating, geophysical survey, excavation, driller, and construction subcontractors. Responsible for client communication on project deliverables and scope development. Responsible for both field and office execution of environmental projects.
  • Field work may be required as part of this position. 
 
Environmental Scientist/Staff Geologist Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in geology, chemistry, environmental sciences, engineering, or related field of study from an accredited university.
  • This position will require field work and travel, as well as early start times and occasional night or weekend work. Will require some extended travel (more than 7 consecutive days).
  • Working knowledge of field documentation and sampling techniques, equipment maintenance or repair, or other activities.  
  • Experience conducting work under the regulatory authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Texas Risk Reduction Program, Railroad Commission of Texas, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and Oklahoma Corporation Commission is a plus.
  • GIS experience a plus; OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel and possess a valid driver’s license in good standing. Candidate will be required to pass a background check in order to enter Federal Facilities.  
  • Willingness to obtain certifications and participate in training activities as needed to support the team.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors to successfully meet shifting needs.
