If you are someone who is interested in a seasonal opportunity to protect and patrol our Connecticut State Parks, we have a unique position available! 

The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Conservation Police Division, has multiple opportunities for Seasonal Patrol Officers (EnCon Rangers) throughout the State Park system.

This position is open to those that will be at least 21 years of age by May 30, 2024. This position requires attendance of mandatory training course (Ranger Training Academy) for those without POST certification. Applicants without current POST certification must be available on weekends during academy dates for in-person training. Also available for remote learning on select weekdays each week of the Ranger Training Academy.

POST police officer certification is not required. New applicants without POST police officer certification or previous EnCon Ranger experience must successfully complete one hundred and twenty (120) hours of mandated training prior to May 30th.    

All returning EnCon Rangers and POST certified officers must successfully complete mandated refresher training such as first aid/cpr, Connecticut law updates and others as directed prior to May 30th.   

Position Highlights
  • Seasonal Patrol Officers, also called EnCon Rangers, assist the State Environmental Conservation Police by working with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of our State Parks resources and activities, while providing for the enforcement of laws and regulations.
  • Selected candidates will perform the EnCon Ranger duties primarily at State Parks providing for security and enforcement of laws and regulations for State Parks.  
  • Hours: These are up to 40 hour per week positions with both first and second shift available.  
  • Location: The locations are primarily at State Parks, Forests, Waterways and recreation areas. 
  • Length of position: February 1, 2024, through December 1, 2024. Most positions will end after Labor Day Holiday. Seasonal hours are limited to 1040 hours per year. 1st and 2nd Shift.

Selection Plan

The selected candidates must be fluent in English, be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment and have valid motor vehicle license. 

Selected candidates will have been:  
-Employed as an EnCon Ranger by DEEP's EnCon Police in 2021, 2022 or 2023.  
or  
-Successfully complete one hundred and twenty (120) hours Seasonal Ranger, DEEP provided training course prior to May 30th.     
or    
-Currently employed as a Connecticut police officer with a current POST certification.   
or     
-Retired in good standing within the last 3 years from a Connecticut police agency without any unresolved or pending disciplinary action as a sworn officer with a valid POST certification.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection performs patrol officer duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

These positions will be performing unarmed security and patrol duties in assigned State Parks.  Providing assistance to park visitors, interacting with public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of resources and activity and provide enforcement of laws and regulations for State Parks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • criminal and motor vehicle laws and law enforcement procedures;  
    • boating laws and regulations;  
    • regulations pertaining to use of parks and forest lands;  
  • Skills 
    • interpersonal skills;  
    • oral and written communication skills. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of criminal and motor vehicle laws and law enforcement procedures; 
  • Knowledge of boating laws and regulations; 
  • Knowledge of regulations pertaining to use of parks and forest lands;
  • Interpersonal skills;
  • Oral and written communication skills. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to meet the following:
    • Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
