Job Description

CPP Investments’ Sustainable Energies Group (SEG) combines the organization’s expertise in renewables, conventional energy and new technology and service solutions to position CPP Investments as the leading global energy investor. SEG has approximately $32 billion in assets, making it highly competitive and flexible in the large and dynamic global energy sector. 

SEG takes advantage of growing market opportunities as the energy sector evolves and global power demand grows, especially for low-carbon energy alternatives. The group holds a diversified portfolio primarily comprised of long-term tangible assets, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro, as well as conventional power, upstream oil & gas, energy midstream, carbon capture and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). It also invests in areas of innovation, technology and services to the energy industries and manages agriculture investments.

The Analyst/Associate will provide support in building and executing the Sustainable Energies Group strategy and drive investment results:

  • Support the execution of Sustainable Energies Group strategy by helping to manage/optimize existing platforms/partnerships, evaluating new market opportunities, and executing new investments
  • Work effectively with Sustainable Energies Group team members, investment committees and other parts of CPP Investments
  • Be part of a global team, participating in global strategic initiatives and staffing model
  • Coach, mentor and develop junior team members
  • Be a strong culture carrier within the Sustainable Energies Group team, demonstrating CPP Investments’ guiding principles and the Sustainable Energies Group’s core principles of innovation, collaboration, transparency and mutual respect.

The Analyst/Associate will have an opportunity to demonstrate and develop the following competencies:

Deal Execution

  • Strong deal execution capabilities. Ability to liaise with external advisors and coordinate deal execution
  • Ability to concurrently research, analyze and evaluate a variety of investment opportunities; as well as to perform due diligence on opportunities including financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors
  • Strong experience in reviewing 3rd party due diligence reports (market, technical, accounting, environmental, legal, etc.)
  • Participate in meetings with prospective companies’ management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other relevant topics as required.

Asset Management and Value Creation

  • Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of existing Sustainable Energies Group investments, as well as support other portfolio company initiatives
  • Present regular performance and valuation review for Sustainable Energies Group investments
  • Identify and bring insights to the team's value creation work (including execution plans)
  • Participate in discussions with portfolio company management and board of directors.

Team Building, Development and Engagement

  • Build and manage relationships with CPP Investments’ internal teams and portfolio companies’ management teams
  • Demonstrated interpersonal effectiveness, in terms of upwards management and establishing relationship with other team members
  • Contribute to enterprise initiatives and represent the Sustainable Energies Group in collaborations with other departments/teams.

Strong Culture Carrier

  • Demonstrate the Guiding Principles and promote them in the Sustainable Energies Group and in CPP Investments
  • Foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge sharing.  Act inclusively with colleagues and promote a culture of collaboration, transparently and mutual respect.

Deal Assessment and Relationship Management

  • Ability to build relationships across cultures/geographies, including with key advisors/partners/management teams
  • Assess relative value and risks, help deal teams quickly analyze and screen markets and investment opportunities
  • Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, industry specialists, etc.)

Qualifications

  • 1-4 years of relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, or corporate development with an emphasis in energy & power investments/transactions
  • Proven experience in supporting due diligence of investment opportunities and a track record of successful investment recommendations
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-office (preferably global) matrix organization
  • A strong intellectual curiosity and passion in investing
  • Strong research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Willingness to travel
  • CFA, CBV or CA designation and additional languages are considered an asset.

Additional Information

The salary range for this position is:

Analyst: $120,000 to $155,000

Associate: $145,000 to $205,000

US state/city legislation requires CPP investments to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The base salary range shown here is a reasonable expectation for the posted role and is part of a competitive total rewards package which includes comprehensive benefits, a performance-based incentive plan, a 401 (k) plan and paid time off. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience and expertise.
