NewFields is seeking an experienced Environmental Scientist to perform various analysis and design tasks related to data evaluation, remediation, and feasibility study analysis. This position is responsible for the design, construction, and operation of soil and groundwater remediation systems. Using various scientific methodologies and disciplines, the Project Environmental Scientist will help collect, synthesize and study source data used to assess remediation alternatives and compile high quality technical reports and presentations.

The ideal candidate will have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with sound judgment and a desire to learn new skills while working in a collaborative environment. The position requires superior written and oral skills and the ability to interface effectively with personnel and clients.  Position requires candidate to perform field work and be HAZWOPER trained.

 

Candidate should have knowledge of New Jersey environmental regulations and technical guidance. Candidate should have knowledge of risk assessments and general chemistry principles. Cost estimating, project specification preparation and project planning skills are a plus.

Requirements

  

Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Science or related discipline.

Experience Requirement: 5+ years 

Software: MS Office is required. AutoCAD, MS Project, and ArcGIS are a plus.

Certifications: HAZWOPER experience is required. A valid HAZWOPER certification is a plus. 

Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license

Required Travel: Seldom to moderate overnight to 4-day travel events may be required (potentially 2 to 5 times per year)


Physical Demands: Position requires sitting for long periods of time, extended hours working on a computer and lifting up to 30 pounds. Field assignments are in a variety of climate conditions and may require standing, squatting, bending and lifting up to 30 pounds over prolonged periods of time. Ability to receive an acceptable medical approval to visit remote manufacturing, marine terminals or oil terminal sites.  Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment on an infrequent basis. PPE may include a combination of hard hats, steel-toed safety shoes, protective eye wear, safety vests, work gloves, Nitrile gloves, fire retardant or fire-resistant clothing in compliance with various facilities safety plans (potentially 12 times per year).  Ability to drive multiple hours per day, several days per month traveling to client offices, project sites or other meetings across the tristate area.

  

Position Responsibilities 

  • Support the evaluation of the nature and extent of contamination, support risk assessments and evaluate remediation alternatives.
  • Review Site investigation and site characterization reports and understand the human and ecological health risks quickly. 
  • Knowledge of NJDEP regulations and guidance documents.
  • Experience planning and conducting environmental field investigations and data collection/sampling.
  • Understand and discuss a Conceptual Site Model with a team of collaborators.
  • Oversee staff conducting field  activities (i.e., drilling, sampling, maintenance activities, and routine testing) and subcontractors. 
  • Conduct site testing, design/optimize remediation systems, evaluate viable remedial alternatives, and prepare detailed cost estimates. 
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques and procedures for engineering analysis 
  • Compile and assess environmental data using spreadsheets, databases and GIS.
  • Assist in the preparation of accurate and professional technical reports and presentations.
  • Document research and review related to environmental impacts.
  • Provide exemplary skills and knowledge of health and safety practices and protocols.
  • Participation in team-based  project work product resulting in client satisfaction and the on-time  completion of quality technical work product.
  • Understand and implement  Quality Assurance/ Quality Control procedures including critical reviews of work by junior staff members.
  • Prepare cost estimates, project  schedules and project proposals for continuing investigation and remedial activities at various sites.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license that is in good standing with NewFields’ Driver Performance Rating System.
  • Excellent communication skills including communication with the management staff as well as regulators  and direct communication with clients.
