POSITION PURPOSE

The Environmental Specialist will support and coordinate programs and activities with respect to environmental services at the operating facility.  This position will assist with maintaining compliance with applicable laws, regulations and permits and with the implementation of best practices and regulatory requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implement environmental management systems, which include written standards, training requirements, monitoring/auditing elements and corrective action steps.  Systems shall exceed compliance and create value added enhancement to plant operations whenever feasible.
  • Evaluate, audit and help manage all routine activities required by facility environmental permits, including sampling, inspections, data management, report preparation and submission.
  • Implement environmental programs and upgrade programs with continuous improvement as the objective.
  • Perform administrative functions outlined in the SSAB Environmental Management System (EMS) manual for the facility.
  • Maintain effective standardized tools to monitor the success of environmental management systems and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide support to operations in performance of environmental management requirements including incident investigation, training and communications, inspections and auditing, hazard assessment, and implementation of regulatory requirements.
  • Provide supervision to contract environmental / janitorial services
  • Participate in environmental committee meetings
  • Perform initial training of new employees; plan and coordinate environmental training
  • Assist with coordinating and conducting routine plant audits and physical inspections to determine compliance
  • Assist with the maintaining and updating existing environmental programs including:
    • Environmental Management System
    • Storm Water
    • Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure
    • Air related activities
    • Waste related activities
    • Water related activities
  • Attend professional training classes and periodic business association meetings
  • Participate in incident investigations
  • Track completion of corrective actions identified through audits or investigations
  • Maintain appropriate records in accordance with SSAB Environmental Policy and related regulations, permits and statutes.
  • Insure that all waste materials are properly stored and shipped off site for disposal.  May be responsible for signing and proper filing of manifests for any hazardous waste shipments
  • Obtain current Safety Data Sheets for all products being used at the facility
  • Complete routine reports required by permits or environmental statutes for review and submission by the Environmental Manager
  • Coordinate and/or perform any sampling activity required by permits
  • Function as the point of contact for any local, state, or federal regulatory inspectors in the absence of the respective Environmental Manager and/or Environmental Coordinator.
  • Function as the Emergency Coordinator for any environmental incident in the absence of the respective Environmental Manager or Environmental Coordinator

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies and Experience

Required:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess attention to detail and organizational skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in air, water and waste permitting
  • Prior experience in heavy manufacturing
  • Training in ISO programs and/or management systems

 

Education

Required:

  • Associates degree or equivalent experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Business Management or related field
  • Professional certification in related fields

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS

This position does not have any direct reports

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position operates primarily in an office environment.  The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanners. This role is partially sedentary, however, some filing and handling of materials is required.  This would require the ability to stand, walk, bend, or kneel, use of hands to finger, hold and handle, reach with hands and arms and to push / pull, lift or carry items up to 20 lbs.

 

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • This position would periodically require work in the mill environment and plant grounds with some exposure to extreme heat/extreme cold, wet and humid conditions,
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt and smoke, noise, mechanical, electrical, chemical hazards and industrial magnets and
  • Walking/stairs and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards
  • Push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs.

 

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
  • Vision at near, mid, and far range and depth perception

 

POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position is full time, salaried, and is not eligible for overtime
  • Position works daytime shifts Monday-Friday with on-call possibility on off hours
