Introduction

Background Information:

SNV is a non-profit international development organisation established in the Netherlands in 1965. For over 50 years, SNV has been at the forefront of development, helping to build local capacity and empower local families and communities to break the cycle of poverty. We are present on the ground in 24 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Middle East and South America and operate in Agrifood systems, Renewable Energy, and Water. Our 1,200+ advisors in the field come from a variety of cultural and technical backgrounds, and the vast majority are nationals of the countries where we work.

Established in Zambia in 1965, SNV is one of Zambia’s leading INGOs and works with locally based development partners including national and local government, civil society organisations and businesses to develop the capacities of local communities and alleviate poverty.  For more information, please refer to our website: www.snv.org.

Project background

SNV has been implementing the Increasing Climate Resilience in Energy and Agricultural Systems and Entrepreneurship (INCREASE) project since 2020. As a way of showcasing Climate Smart Agriculture practices in various districts, the project embarked on an ambitious bore hole drilling program last year. The purpose of this borehole drilling and equipping program is to help targeted Lead Farmers to demonstrate Climate Smart Agricultural practices which include the use of renewable energy using the solar kits for irrigating in the demo plots. The idea being that through these installations, climate smart agriculture and renewable energy interventions will be demonstrated in the demo plots throughout the year and that farmers around these installations will start adopting these practices.

This marries well with the INCREASE project’s goal is to address the major challenge of climate change that farmers, agribusinesses, and SMEs are facing. To achieve this, the project strengthens the adaptive capacity of agricultural and energy systems as well as the promotion of climate smart (CS) diversification practices and productive use of renewable energy.

As the project aims to address the major challenge of climate change that farmers, agribusinesses and SMEs are facing using a value chain approach, the project set up demonstration sites with full Increase models that demonstrate CSA practises and promotion of renewable energy for lead farmers/women groups in the 3 value chains namely oilseeds, horticulture and dairy. The targeted farmers for this borehole equipping protect are in different locations and have already established Increase models and other identified demo plots that act as our field school for application of CSA practices in the three value chains. The farmers also have boreholes already drilled. The set-up will demonstrate renewable energy application on underground water extraction and water efficiency for winter crop production and sustained fruit production using drip irrigation.

The drilling and equipping of boreholes started last year but could not be completed as they were being done in phases. All the boreholes were drilled what remained is the equipping of the four remaining boreholes. Hence this year the proposal is to finish equipping the remaining boreholes. In eastern province three drilled boreholes were not equipped while in central province one drilled borehole was not equipped with the solar irrigation kit.

Thus, the Solar pumping systems and drip irrigation kits will be set up in the four (4) sites in the two (2) provinces and districts as summarised in the table below: -
