Job Description

The Battery Engineer, Failure Analysis, position is an exciting new role located in Rayong, Thailand.  The successful candidate will work on the Product Development team to perform root cause analysis for semi-solid battery devices. The role will help invent, develop, and standardize cell teardown process. This role will report to the Product Team Lead.

Qualifications

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare standard cell teardown procedures. Develop, maintain, and validate methods and equipment for cell teardown.
  • Perform cell tear downs, organize, and produce clear failure analysis reports.
  • Implement a systematic investigation approach for identifying the root causes of cell failure. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Quality, R&D, Process, and Global teams to implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Acquire and interpret analytical and cell test data using materials characterization and electrochemical techniques to supplement FA activity.
  • Train, guide, and define tasks for operators to facilitate cell teardown work at high standards.
  • Dissect cells of various form factors and extract electrodes for characterization.
  • Build coin and pouch cells from extracted electrodes. Identify the cell degradation root cause.
  • Conduct post-mortem analysis via SEM-EDS, FTIR, TGA-DSC, XRD, EIS, and other analytical methods.
  • Research literature and industry for advanced cell post-mortem methodologies that may be applicable for cell failure analysis.

 Required Skills and Experience 

  • 2-3 years of experience in lithium-ion battery research, development, or failure/ root cause analysis.
  • Hands-on experience in lithium-ion battery teardown process and characterization of battery components by diffraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy tools.
  • Experience with conducting experiments in a laboratory setting.
  • Deep know-how in variety of electrochemical techniques such as CV, EIS, GITT, PITT for battery diagnostics.
  • Expertise in multiple characterization techniques including SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, ICP, TGA-DSC
  • Deep understanding in battery materials, interfaces, electrolytes, and electrochemistry to drive failure analysis of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Familiar with statistical analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Thai and English languages.
  • Highly motivated and action oriented as demonstrated by accomplishments.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment. 

Education 

  • BS or MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent

Additional Information

Physical and Environmental Standards   

  • Capable of working in a low moisture dry room environment as required: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point) 
  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers 
  • Capable of meeting OSHA standards for manual lifting guidelines: < 50lbs
