Why You Should Join the E3 Team
When you join the E3 team, you will be working on some of the most important energy issues with some of the top minds in the electricity industry. We help shape energy and climate policy, play vital roles in regulatory proceedings, advise executives, and inform investment and planning selections. At E3, you will be challenged and inspired.

Who We Are
Founded in 1989, Energy + Environmental Economics (E3) is a fast-growing energy consulting firm that helps utilities, regulators, policy makers, developers, and investors make the most educated strategic decisions possible as they implement new public policies, deploy and develop new technologies, and address customers’ shifting expectations. We have offices in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Denver, and Calgary.

Because E3 works with customers from all sectors of the electricity industry, we provide a 360-degree knowledge of markets, planning, policy, regulation, and environmental factors. Just as important, we are driven to deliver clear, unbiased evaluations that help customers make informed decisions.

E3 works on high-profile, high-impact projects in jurisdictions that spearhead the implementation of clean energy policy. In California, Hawaii, and New York, we are advising state agencies and regulators about how to implement clean energy policies with an emphasis on customer incentives and markets. E3 is also expanding its international presence with recent projects in Europe, China, India, and Africa.

The Role
E3 is hiring for a new role in its Climate Pathways & Electrification practice area to join the Forecasting Anywhere product team. We are looking for someone passionate about staying on top of innovations in data science and leveraging new methods and algorithms to solve challenging analytical problems.

You will join the E3 team developing software tools providing granular geospatial forecasts of electric load and distributed energy resource (DER) adoption to support regulatory policy and utility distribution planning for the clean energy transition. The DERs modeled include distributed solar (PV), energy storage, electric vehicles, and building electrification measures among others. The tools use data from a variety of sources that are pre-processed and stored in a datalake for geospatial analysis using Uber’s H3 indexing system. This tool has been used to visualize EV charger installations in disadvantaged communities in California, distribution network capacity constraints from transportation and building electrification in New York City and geospatially granular adoption of DER in Nevada.

About the Role
- Hours: Full Time
- Travel: 0-10%
- Office Location: Hybrid work schedule from our office in Downtown San Francisco. This role is open to other E3 office locations as well.

Work Environment
E3 has adopted a hybrid and flexible work environment that adapts to changing needs of projects and safety requirements. Because E3 thrives in a strong collaborative office-based working environment, we encourage our E3 employees to work from the office at least 2-3 days per week, usually including Tuesdays and Thursdays. Must be able to work for extended hours in front of a computer screen and conduct meetings on the telephone and virtually.

Responsibilities

    • Implement and improve variety of models (e.g. linear regression, regression tress, Bayesian, logit, fixed effect, machine learning) using data in data lake to estimate technical potential and adoption propensities for DER
    • Develop and improve heuristic approaches to calculate, constrain or adjust forecasted technical potential and adoption propensities where historical data is limited or a poor predictor
    • Run Python code in cloud-based software production environment using technical potential and adoption propensities to perform spatial allocation of forecasted loads and DER adoption
    • Craft analyses and visualizations to elegantly communicate results using GIS visualization, PowerBI, statistical analysis and other tools. Review and QA/QC spatial allocation results to identify and isolate issues to improve results
    • Continuously improve methods and outputs through rigorous QA testing

Requirements

    • Bachelors in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field
    • Good understanding of data science QA methodologies and tools
    • Experience processing and visualizing geospatial data, building predictive models and simulations
    • Experience with python coding, ideally in software production environment
    • Knowledge in SQL and data processing
    • Strong interest in the energy and power systems sector
    • Ability to work collaboratively and proactively in a fast-paced environment
    • Experience communicating technical details and findings to a non-technical audience
    • A questioning attitude and curiosity: the ability to ask questions and to get to the root of the cause of issues

Preferred

    • Masters degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field
    • 2+ years of work experience in machine learning or data science
    • Proficiency in software development and contributing to production software code especially in Python
    • Familiarity with data science platforms and software (e.g. Jupyter Notebooks, BinderHub, Apache Spark, Data Version Control, Delta Lake, Kubernetes, Kepler.gl)
    • Prior experience in transportation, urban systems, electrical grids, or other related domains dealing with large spatial and time-series datasets
    • Familiarity with AWS cloud technologies and automated deployment and orchestrated tools
    • Familiarity with Infrastructure as code (IaC) using DevOps methodology and versioning to deliver applications and their supporting infrastructure rapidly and reliably at scale

Things That Set You Apart

    • Work experience in the energy, power systems sector
    • Subject matter expertise specifically in energy, power systems, and climate change issues
    • Project management and leadership experience in a technical or analytical environment
    • Belief in the importance of a transition to a low-carbon economy and love thinking about the future of energy
    • Enjoy collaboration and helping your team do their finest work; awareness that each perspective brings different experiences, techniques, and qualifications to the table
    • Enjoy translating technical concepts to a broader audience
    • Take ownership of your work, proactively seeking out answers to questions and enjoy finding creative solutions to issues you encounter
