Oceans, Reefs & Aquariums (ORA®) produces aquacultured saltwater fish, invertebrates, and live aquarium foods for the marine aquarium hobby. The ORA hatchery complex is located at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Campus in Ft. Pierce, Florida. ORA is the largest marine ornamental hatchery in North America and we are constantly developing new techniques to bring the finest captive bred specimens to environmentally conscientious aquarists throughout the world. Aquacultured marine life is the only alternative to wild caught fish and invertebrates for aquariums.

Job Description

In order of priority, the Shipping Manager is responsible and accountable for:

 

1. Achieving company objectives by ensuring the safe and timely shipment of the highest quality aquacultured products to customers around the world.

2. Supervising and developing a team of Packing Technicians; providing necessary training and counselling; setting schedules and shifts to accommodate orders throughout the year.

3. Working with UPS, FedEx, domestic and international airlines to schedule and track shipments.

4. Completing all relevant paperwork, scheduling heath inspections and communicating with customs brokers, airlines and government officials to maintain compliance with domestic and international regulations.

5. Performing and overseeing maintenance and husbandry duties on animal holding systems.

6. Evaluating, selecting and negotiating with packing suppliers and shippers for best prices and ordering packing and shipping supplies as necessary.

7. Monitoring and recommending improvements in processes to increase the efficiency of the department and improve customer satisfaction.

8. Communicating with the Sales office and Production department managers throughout the day.

9. Learning packing techniques such as clipping and sealing bags.

10. Learning the various species of fish and inverts of the company’s product offerings.

11. Preparing bags and boxes for shipping and must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.

12. Having flexibility with scheduled hours to stay late or come in early depending on the needs of the shipping day

13. Carrying out the abovementioned tasks in a hot, humid hatchery environment while standing for long periods of time. Some of the time working may be spent standing on stools or ladders

14. Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  1. Prior experience keeping marine fish and corals is preferred.
  2. Experience shipping tropical fish and corals is preferred.
  3. Knowledge of domestic and international rules and regulations related to the transport of live animals is a plus.
  4. Strong computer skills including Quickbooks, MS Office products and shipping programs.
  5. Experience or education related to working in marine environment with pumps, plumbing, tanks, and water systems preferred.
  6. Must be able to work flexible hours, including late nights, early mornings and weekends.
  7. Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff.
  8. May be required to have a valid Florida Drivers License with acceptable driving record. 

Additional Information

Job involves frequent climbing, walking on unleveled surfaces, bending, stooping, ducking, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. and includes very infrequent sitting.

 

Work is performed in an external environment, including unairconditioned greenhouse type structures, 99% of the time.

 

The worker is in adverse environmental conditions up to 99% of the time including heat, rain and cold and worker may be required to wear PPE as part of job duties.
