Job Description

The role of Energy Storage Engineer is an exciting new role within the central Technical Management unit. Statkraft is seeking a motivated individual with excellent technical skills and proven experience in energy storage to help support the growing energy storage team and wider Engineering teams with opportunities to work on diverse and innovative projects in a variety of settings.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide energy storage expertise to support both stand-alone and hybrid storage-renewable energy projects at various project development stages across the different regions that Statkraft operate within. At Statkraft, hybrid energy storage projects can include co-location with solar PV, wind and hydro, and as plant operators within the market we operate energy storage for a variety of use-cases. Key elements of the role will also relate to central engineering activities to support the delivery of regional projects more generally.

Project locations are mainly in the UK and Ireland, but since this is a central role, the successful candidate will gain opportunity to assume supporting roles on projects across mainland Europe and Latin America. The role will be of fixed location, but there will be also opportunity to travel.

Working in the Technical Management unit as the Energy Storage Engineer your main responsibilities will include:

  • Energy storage system sizing and system engineering design
  • Creation of engineering drawings including layouts and schematics
  • Assume role of Project Engineer for BESS element of projects when required
  • Provide technical support to deliver installations in conjunction with the Project Management and on-site Field Engineering Teams
  • Provide support to Field Engineering teams as required
  • Technical due diligence (e.g. in relation to energy storage products, or project/portfolio acquisitions) considering engineering, social, financial and safety-related matters
  • Work directly with modelling teams to facilitate the modelling simulations of energy storage and system optimisations
  • Input into the development and improvement of modelling tools related to energy storage and hybrid energy storage projects, including dispatch regimes for stacked use-cases
  • Evaluation of different energy storage technologies and configurations based on technical and financial parameters
  • Input into energy storage testing methods and performance evaluation mechanisms
  • Participation in energy storage commissioning and testing activities, including support during testing, test outcome validation and reporting of test results against contractual requirements
  • Creation of energy storage guidelines for the standardisation of design approaches across the company
  • Ensure safety aspects are understood by project participants, and that appropriate measures are put in place with specification, design, commissioning, and ongoing system operation to reflect the safety considerations of the technology being delivered
  • Drafting energy storage technical specifications and employer’s requirements
  • Input into contract technical schedules (for contracts such as supply and commissioning contracts) including drafting wording / contractual mechanisms
  • Technical input into supplier and contractor RFI/RFP/tender packs
  • Technical review and feedback of proposals (such as energy storage vendor proposals)
  • Liaising directly with energy storage suppliers, consultants and other third parties
  • Maintain good internal and external relationships with contractors and suppliers
  • Contribution to supplier quality and safety compliance control and evaluation
  • Contribute to managing the CSR (corporate social responsibility) of battery products in accordance with ESG (Environmental Social Governance)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor University degree or an equivalent level of qualification in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Meaningful experience working with one or more of: static energy storage, relevant renewable/power industry (this could be gained for example in EPC, OEM or technical consultancy setting)
  • Knowledge of electrical systems design (12 to 1500 Vdc), ideally specifically related to energy storage
  • Experience in Autocad for layouts and single line diagrams
  • Understanding of utility-scale battery chemistries and key performance indicators
  • Understanding of utility-scale energy storage balance of plant technology
  • Understanding of utility-scale energy storage use-cases
  • Knowledge of safety relating to energy storage and technological best-practices
  • Knowledge of utility-scale energy storage system architectures and management systems
  • Appreciation of IEC standards related to utility-scale energy storage and balance of plant (system/component design, safety, testing, environmental)
  • Knowledge of project delivery within a relevant engineering discipline
  • Excellent team working, interpersonal and customer facing skills
  • Attention to detail / analytical skills
  • Good organisation and methodical working practices
  • Self-driven, focused, results and quality oriented
  • Strong H&S awareness and strict adherence to Statkraft strict Health and Safety policy in all aspects of the work
