Position Overview:
 
Manager I, Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour is responsible for Cell House Tour (CHT) operations during the evening program. Manager I will ensure efficient operations and closing procedures, provide enhanced visitor service levels through the development of a service-oriented staff to 800 visitors per night mid-March through early November and 300 visitors per night from early November through mid-March. Manager I will also provide transitional support between Day program and Evening program alongside daytime managers and supervisors.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
 
The Manager I, Cellhouse Tour, will directly, or through the supervision of others, ensure that the following duties and responsibilities are met:
 
Personnel Management
  • Supervise the operations of the night program, one Cell House Tour Supervisor, and 6 to 9 night VSR’s depending on operating season.
  • Provide assistance to Cellhouse Tour Associate Director, Day Manager and Assistant Manager in providing direction and performance management of Shift Supervisors and VSRs during core times of the day.
  • Conduct daily staff briefings for CHT night staff.
  • Oversee completion of formal training in operations, safety and other areas.
  • Provide coaching and counseling as needed. Conduct annual performance reviews. 
  • Ensure that departmental personnel timekeeping, benefit coordination and files are accurate, current, and confidential.
  • Track and analyze evening CHT staff attendance.  Reporting to Associate Director, Director and HR staff that exhibit excessive attendance issues.
  • Assist with all department recruiting and hiring procedures.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of employee service, safety and management training programs.
  • In coordination with Associate Director and People and Culture branch, manage all performance and conduct related issues and disciplinary actions. 
  • Ensure that all personnel are trained in Conservancy values and DEI standards and that those standards are embedded in the work culture.
  • Create, post, distribute, and adjust as needed daily breaker schedule.
  • Work as part of island management team to development and coordinate team-building events and employee recognition program.
 Technical/Vendor Relations
  • Assist divisional directors in working to address contractor deficiencies, as required.
  • Ensure that all equipment utilized during night program and facilities are operational, functional, of good quality and complies with contractual guidelines.
  • Directly responsible for oversight and accuracy of daily inventory counts and levels, reporting unusual discrepancies immediately to Director and Associate Director, Visitor Programs.
 Operational/ Visitor Service Oversight
  • Directly responsible for assuring the safe and efficient operations of the CHT evening program.
  • Ensure that night operations of Cell House Tour are efficient, well-staffed, with all required functions met on a daily basis.
  • In conjunction with Associate Director, Alcatraz Cell House Tour and Manager II, Alcatraz Cell House Tour establish and ensure appropriate level of visitor service and assist with response to visitor comments and concerns.
  • Ensure that all night program operational functions facilitate smooth visitor flow and contain accurate, attractive interpretive information.
  • Ensure that all staff can respond promptly and proactively to any visitor concerns or complaints.
 Safety
  • Lead the CHT team in all emergency response situations.  In case of emergency during night program, will act as response lead in conjunction with GGNPC, Extended Hours management staff and NPS Staff.
  • Ensure that all Visitor Programs and Facilities observe Conservancy safety guidelines and that all work areas are hazard free and properly lit at night.
  • Ensure that all VPS training programs include explicit training in safety regulations and that all department employee’s complete safety training.
  • Ensure that Safety reports are filed immediately in case or accident or incident, complete safety investigations as needed.
  • Provide regular reminders about safety in daily pre shift meetings.
 Partner Liaison Responsibilities
  • Work with National Park Service, non-VSPS GGNPC and partner personnel to ensure collaborative, congenial work environments.
 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 Education Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in business management, liberal studies, hospitality management or 5 years of comparable professional experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Position requires employee to sit and work at a computer approximately 25% of the time.
  • Position requires employee to stand and or walk 75% of the time.
  • Employee must be able to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 40 pounds for short distances.
  • Outdoor work at night in inclement weather is probable.
  • The work week follows the Extended Hours Program, currently Tuesday through Saturday.  2pm - 10pm mid-March through early November.  11am – 7pm Early November through mid-March.
  • Work site is located at the top of Alcatraz Island, which requires a ¼ mile walk, with up to a 13% grade.
  • Holiday work is likely.
Salary/Benefits:  This is an exempt position that falls under pay grade 14 with a salary  of $70,000 per year.
