Job Description

Renewable energy is increasingly displacing coal, gas and nuclear energy from the electricity generation mix which in turn requires new non-fossil ancillary, flexible, grid services. The remit of the UK Grid Services team is to develop new solutions to allow the grid to transition to our Net Zero future.

Statkraft is developing a portfolio of Greener Grid ParksTM to provide services, including frequency response, voltage control, fault current and system strength support, restoration and reserve, to the Transmission System Operator.

Statkraft has been successful in winning contracts at seven sites in Stability Pathfinders comprising of both synchronous compensators and grid forming battery technology and are constantly on the lookout to introduce new technologies to our sites. Statkraft currently operate two projects at Keith and Lister Drive with synchronous compensators under Pathfinder Phase 1.

As a Grid Storage Engineer in the Grid Services team, you will play a key role in the delivery of Statkraft’s Greener Grid Parks, from initial site investigations though construction and commissioning, and handover to Statkraft’s Operations team and provide support to any operational events or issues.

Through your responsibilities on particular projects, you will play a critical role in helping to decarbonize the GB electricity system and increase the use of renewable energy. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and approve the commissioning of these Greener Grid Parks and will be primarily site based. These sites are located across Scotland England and Wales.
  • Represent Statkraft’s interests on site, liaising with technology providers (typically battery suppliers and rotating machine suppliers but including others); balance of plant contractors, Owner’s Engineer, ESO/ FSO (Future System Operator), Transmission Owner,_ ensuring that the project is developed so as to meet the agreed contract technical specifications and compliance with the Grid Code.
  • Interface to Statkraft’s Project Manager to report on progress on site against the schedule and issues which arise at site.
  • Check that the project is built in accordance with best practice. Coordination with the Statkraft Health and Safety team is needed and supporting other parties on site with meeting their Health and Safety obligations is required.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will also have experience in one or more of the below

  • Grid scale battery energy storage systems
  • Synchronous machines
  • Electrical transmission plant (switchgear, transformers, cables etc.)
  • Grid Code
  • Managing multiple parties (technology providers, BoP Contractor, Owner’s Engineer) at site
  • Numerical analysis
  • Power system analysis tools e.g. DigSilent, PSCAD
  • Presentations / report writing
  • Programme (schedule) reporting
  • Degree in electrical engineering or other relevant subject - MSc, PhD, Chartered Engineer
  • Experience in electricity industry with experience of site commissioning work
