The intent of this role is to lead our engineering and professional services within the renewable energy industry in the US while growing our presence. The home office for this position is Phoenix, AZ although travel is expected.


The Renewable Energy Civil Practice Leader will provide executive oversight, technical and project management of our renewable energy projects. They will mentor our renewable energy staff, utilize their business development skills to identify new project leads and opportunities to grow the department while maintaining our existing clientele. The ideal candidate will be able to prepare proposals, participate in project interviews and negotiate contracts and commercial terms. Superior writing and oral communication skills are essential.


This position is key to maintaining and promoting our civil renewable energy capabilities in the US. The candidate will be involved in strategic discussions on all aspects of the Renewable Energy Practice, including technical, commercial, and management discussions, as well as staffing needs and workload demands. This position reports directly to our President.


Primary job duties:

  • Assume responsibility for our current Design / Engineering Services and Owner’s Engineering Services in the Renewable Energy Practice.
  • Develop and execute the vision and workplan for long-term contract targets and win strategies including any key hires or positions to accomplish these goals.
  • Build, grow, and manage interdisciplinary teams of in-house staff and/or subconsultants.
  • Interface with other WOODPATEL leadership across all Practices and Divisions to maintain lines of communication and inter-practice relationships.
  • Work with the Water Resource and Field Services Leadership to establish goals for renewable energy engineering, water  resources, and land surveying services to help identify and assist with developing renewable energy opportunities.
  • Prepare, review and/or oversee project-level budgets, scopes of work, and schedules.
  • Support with client communication and project/contract management as needed.

Project-level duties include:

  • Reviewing project financials and making decisions on schedule/resources to achieve project goals.
  • Provide deep technical/design experience to support the design process, when needed.
  • Be the expert; assist clients in navigating the various regulatory or permitting requirements on projects.
  • Review engineering design plans for compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Oversee the design of WOODPATEL staff and sub-consultants through entitlements, preliminary design, final design and construction. 
  • Provide project management skills to support the Project Managers, as needed.
Requirements

Education, Experience, and Other Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, advanced degree a plus.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience managing design/engineering teams, ideally in the renewable energy sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas to peers,  senior staff, and clients.
  • Capacity to work within a hybrid work-from-office and work-from-home environment.
  • Travel is required when necessary, including the potential for overnight stays.
  • Experience with common software for industry.

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances.  Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
