Job Description

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

We are currently growing our Reservoir Development team within our Geothermal Resources and Development team, to ensure that we continue to develop and sustainably manage the geothermal resources under our control.

The next few years represent a time of substantial change for our geothermal operations. The Tauhara Geothermal project (a 174 MW geothermal plant that is New Zealand’s most significant renewable investment and will incorporate the world’s largest geothermal steam turbine) will be commissioned later in 2023. This is only the first of a broader pipeline of geothermal projects to support ongoing generation from the Wairakei -Tauhara Geothermal System, such as expansions at the Te Huka and Te Mihi geothermal plants. So we have multiple exciting and challenging projects for you to get involved in.

We’re looking for a Senior Geoscientist that will analyse and maintain geoscientific data and to provide technical input to the sustainable management of geothermal resources.  They’ll carry out geological reservoir evaluations, reservoir conceptual modelling and provide geoscience and geotechnical insights to support the growth of our geothermal generation business.

They will primarily work in the Reservoir Development team and coordinate with the Drilling Team to plan and design new production, injection and monitoring wells.  This role also involves liaising with contractors providing specialist scientific services.

This position reports to our Reservoir Development Manager, Warren Mannington.

Qualifications

You’ll have tons of geothermal experience specifically when it comes to development, geoscience (geology, geophysics, geochemistry) and geological modelling. You will have a relevant tertiary qualification in geology, engineering or a related field.

Ideally you'll have experience in using commercially available reservoir evaluation and spatial analysis tools, such as Seequent Leapfrog and ArcGIS, or the ability to develop these skills through on-the-job training. Experience using data science, analysis and analytical tools such as Python, Excel and/or Matlab would also be valuable, as well as office productivity tools such as Office 365: we rely heavily on digital tools to work together effectively.

You’ll be joining a small but motivated world class geothermal team. It’s important that have excellent teamwork and communication skills since you’ll be interacting regularly with a bunch of different groups across the broader geothermal business; geologists, reservoir engineers, geochemists, geophysics and reservoir modellers. Ensuring these groups have consistency between the reservoir models, field data and resource management strategy is key.

Solid relationship-building skills will be important in this role as you will be interacting with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will develop strong working relationships where people trust you, and look to you for your advice and support.
