Job Summary

The Plant Coordinator directs the shift activities and supervises the day-to-day operational activities of operators in a production department during their assigned shift. The Shift Supervisor works with other supervisors and members of management to coordinate the use of Company resources in keeping with established policies, procedures, and plant priorities. This position is responsible for safely meeting production goals while maintaining compliance with environmental and quality parameters.  


Essential Job Functions 

  • Manage plant operations to maintain personnel and process safety on assigned shift. 
  • Manage workflow and scheduling of plant personnel on assigned shift, documenting personnel call offs and make necessary calls to fill positions.
  • Respond to plant, personnel, product quality, production, and environmental emergencies during assigned shift.
  • Serve as the incident commander in the event of a plant emergency.
  • Responsible for documenting all events, near-misses, and other incidents to appropriate departments, leadership, and team members, to include pictures, witness statements, emergency contact and services as necessary. 
  • Responsible for reporting and initiating incident investigation as necessary, assign follow-up to appropriate department.
  • Collaborate with department managers in ongoing development of employees in an industrial environment.
  • Coordinate all maintenance resources in the absence of day shift maintenance management. 
  • Manage plant operations to ensure final product quality is within specifications.
  • Monitor and manage process conditions to achieve plant goals objectives; assign work to personnel accordingly.
  • Work proactively with department superintendents to meet project and production completion deadlines.
  • Collaborate with department superintendents and HR to assess and discuss the need for appropriate disciplinary action as needed. 
  • Interpret and ensure consistent application of organizational policies. 
  • Communicate with department management in a timely manner to troubleshoot situations that may arise.
  • Support and comply with all food safety, quality, and legal requirements.
  • This position may be assigned extra workdays during plant outages, extra weekend shifts to bring plant online after scheduled outages, and/or may be required to come in on scheduled off days for lockouts and equipment shutdown. This position may also be required to cover night shift for other shift coordinators during 
  • Other similar duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Regular, prompt attendance and ability to work shift work, weekends, and holidays (rotating).
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan priorities effectively. 
  • Strong communication (spoken and written) skills for coordination, training, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate team members, with effective conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong Operational familiarity with a corn processing plant.
  • Excellent prioritizing and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Basic math and algebra skills.
  • Self-starter who can operate without direct supervision.
  • Able to understand and comply with plant GMP and personnel practice requirements.

Physical/Mental Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.


The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.


In addition, Employees in this position must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • · Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work, including twisting and reaching.
  • Climbing stairs, and/or vertical ladders of varying heights.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Lifting objects of minimum of 10lbs, with maximum single-person lift limit of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
  • Visually inspecting equipment and verifying information, often in small print.
  • Driving and/or operating heavy machinery safely and be alert and aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Applying sideways/upward/downward pressure to tighten and loosen hardware.
  • Pushing and/or pulling material and/or equipment, with a maximum sing-person push or pull limit of 75lbs.

Education/Training

  • Transportation Worker’s Identification Card
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, High school diploma or equivalent with strong fundamental skills (math, reading, and writing), or combination of relevant experience and education.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain certifications in HAZMAT technician level response and confined space rescue. Trained in level 3 electrical.

Experience

  • 5-8 years’ experience in related position preferred.
  • 3 years’ experience in supervisory role preferred.
