JOB SUMMARY: This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), Eastern Regional Headquarters (ERH), and the Scientific Services Division (SSD) with (1) vacancy located in Bohemia, NY. MAJOR DUTIES: The working title for this position is Deputy Chief, Scientific Services Division. As Deputy Chief, you will perform the following duties: Assist with policy development and evaluation regarding data collection, analysis, prognosis, interpretations and impact based decision support services. Plan for new training to address advances in theoretical meteorology and hydrology. Provide field visitation to resolve issues, give training, and evaluate and introduce new procedures. Identify, evaluate, develop, implement and manage new techniques, datasets, policy and verification techniques all aimed at improving products and services. Write technical papers regarding operational application of scientific theories for distribution and review and edit technical papers submitted from other offices. Monitor, coordinate and make recommendations on collaborative research projects. Develop training and provide guidance on interpretation of new data from new technologies or application of new techniques. Conditions of Employment: Coordinates regional participation in hydrometeorological and climate collaborative and field research activities to ensure the development of all scientific research, training, and technology: Requires travel to field offices, NWSH, conferences/workshops, planning meetings, partner and stakeholder meetings, and for other purposes as necessary. Supports the Regional Operations Center, which includes occasional shift work. Incumbent must maintain sharp mental focus during highly stressful events. Incumbent may be required to maintain weather watch at office when general public is evacuating the area. This position is placed in a non-bargaining unit status due to the incumbent being considered a "Management Official" because of their influence on creating policy that will affect working conditions of employees during a specific time frame.
