Key responsibilities

Leading the engineering efforts to develop the next generation lithium metal anode

Testing electrochemical, chemical, and physical properties of Li metal anodes

Study the relationship between Li metal anode and battery cell performance

Collaborate closely with other team members to develop core technologies

Preparation of technical reports and presentations

Assist the prototyping team with the upscaling of Li metal anodes

Experience & Qualifications

Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering field

5 years of experience in the manufacturing of Li metal anodes or development of Li-metal batteries, including cell assembly and validation

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail and organizational skills

Communicative skills in an interdisciplinary and international work environment

Main objectives

Research existing and new battery management system technologies.
Evaluate, design, and test BMS under the scope of Sonos’ products.
Develop a holistic battery management system with a platform approach and focus on accuracy, adaptability, power efficiency, safety, thermal management, level of integration, reliability, and cost.
Lead and perform a schematic, circuit, and PCB designs for proof of concept and conduct performance tests under various environmental and usage conditions.
Develop BMS requirement documents, including specifications, performance requirements, form factor dependencies, test, and validation plans.
Create and maintain a trend report on BMS technologies.

Skills

Experience with BMS and fuel gauging and fuel-gauging algorithms
Experience in analog and mixed circuit design, including protection circuits, ADCs, DACs, signal conditioning, thermal management, and low-power microcontrollers
Embedded Firmware programming skills
Experience in creating specifications and requirement documents

Overview:

The Research Engineer is actively involved in a European project centered on Lithium recovery from secondary sources containing Li. This role entails a focus on the development and scaling-up of innovative 'waste-to-resource' metallurgical pathways aimed at extracting and recovering valuable metals. Additionally, they contribute to the design, lab-scale demonstration, and scale-up of hydrometallurgical recycling processes tailored for End-of-Life LFP batteries. Moreover, the candidate participates in European projects dedicated to conceptual process flow design and lab-scale demonstration of recycling processes for next-generation LIBs (SSBs).

Key responsibilities will include:

Design and execute lab and pilot-scale recycling process experiments. Perform pilot testing, result evaluation, and reporting.
Equipment designing, quality check, installation support, and commissioning.
Metal recovery process techniques for Critical Raw Materials.
Perform physicochemical analysis.
Contribution to funding proposal and grant application preparation. (Previous experience in EU-funded projects is advantageous.)

Experience and Qualifications:

PhD/MSc in the field of Chemistry / Chemical Engineering / Process Engineering / Material Science.
Knowledge of chemistry principles and methods with the ability to interpret results and an ability to communicate effectively.
Experience/knowledge of characterization techniques (eg., ICP-OES, XRD, XPS, TGA…)
Experience/knowledge of hydrometallurgical processes (e.g. Leaching).
Experience/knowledge of electrochemical separation processes (e.g. Ion exchange metal recovery). (Advantageous)
Experience/knowledge of LiB recycling techniques. (Advantageous)
Team player.
Ability to work under pressure.
Fluent in English (reading; writing; speaking).
Able to comprehend, summarise, and explain scientific information through presentations and reports.

Knowledge of battery recycling is beneficial for this role.

Key responsibilities will include:

Manage internal EU project activities in collaboration with colleagues from different technical departments within the company.
Draft new EU proposals for recycling concepts and organize meetings with suitable partners to form EU consortia.
Write project deliverables and conduct market surveys in a timely and efficient manner.
Contribute to preparing market research, cost-benefit analysis, dissemination and exploitation plans, and other relevant documents.
Plan and execute periodic technical and administrative meetings with the recycling team.
Oversee activities and deliverables of all EU projects related to recycling.

Experience and Qualifications:

Master's degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Hydrometallurgy, Geometallurgy, or related field.
At least 2 years of project management experience with European Commission-supported projects (e.g., HORIZON), with a strong understanding of the European ecosystem.
Knowledge of battery recycling is advantageous.
