A Cloud Systems Architect reports to the Sr. Manager of Infrastructure Operations and is instrumental in shaping the enterprise cloud strategy, ensuring seamless integration of services, and driving innovation to meet the evolving needs of IT customers.
This individual is primarily responsible for the effective operations of cloud systems. In the context of cloud-based systems, this includes (but is not limited to):
- Cloud Architecture and Design
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define and refine cloud architecture, aligning it with business objectives and technical requirements.
- Create comprehensive cloud solution blueprints, encompassing high-level design, microservices, APIs, data flow, security, and scalability considerations.
- Evaluate and recommend cloud services, tools, and technologies that best suit the company's goals and industry trends.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Leadership
- Lead the implementation of infrastructure as code (IaC) practices using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
- Establish and enforce best practices for IaC, ensuring consistent and standardized provisioning and configuration management.
- Cloud Platform Expertise
- Serve as a subject matter expert on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, demonstrating deep understanding of core services and capabilities.
- Design and optimize cloud-based solutions for high availability, fault tolerance, security, and performance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with software development, DevOps, and operations teams to integrate cloud infrastructure seamlessly into the development lifecycle.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership in implementing DevOps practices and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
- Security and Compliance Assurance
- Architect and implement robust security measures for cloud systems, including identity and access management, data encryption, and compliance with industry standards.
- Conduct regular security assessments, audits, and penetration testing, addressing vulnerabilities and driving security enhancements.
- Technology Research and Innovation
- Stay at the forefront of cloud computing advancements and emerging technologies, applying innovative solutions to business challenges.
- Lead efforts to pilot and adopt new technologies that enhance system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
Internal Control Responsibilities:
Support the Internal Control process, which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls and suggesting and modifying the policies, procedures, and controls to match the business better.
Communicate upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Qualifications:
- Extensive experience as a Cloud Systems Architect, Solutions Architect, or similar roles.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms such as Azure and OCI, with a proven track record of designing and implementing complex, scalable architectures.
- Strong expertise in infrastructure as code (IaC) tools, CI/CD pipelines, and configuration management.
- Proficiency in scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, Bash, Java) for automation and integration.
- Excellent understanding of networking, security principles, and best practices for cloud environments.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect) are highly desirable.
- Foundational knowledge of cloud system automation, orchestration, and management tooling such as but not limited to: Azure DevOps, CloudHealth, Divvycloud, Terraform, and Ansible
- Knowledge of operating systems, applications and a sound understanding of hardware and network interactions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels
- Ability to analyze and solve problems
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize and organize a diverse, dynamic body of work.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:
Ability to: sit for up to eight hours per day; type and/or keyboard for a few hours per day; be mobile within a confined, crowded area; communicate by speech and hearing in person or by phone in a professional manner. Visual acuity to perform close detail work, operating a computer. Ability to: write by hand and/or keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours a per day, bend at waist, twist upper body, stand, walk and negotiate uneven surfaces; assemble papers, staple and file; apply sufficient force to open and close drawers.
