DescriptionDo you think that we should be designing urban drainage better? Have you considered how traditional drainage practices could be improved to factor in urban design, placemaking, and improving the public realm, as well as solving flooding?
Working as part of a small team based across India and the UK, you will provide input into solutions for a wide range of complex surface water issues using blue-green infrastructure and sustainable drainage practices. You will support the team, learning and growing as an individual and expanding your knowledge; you’ll also be given the opportunity to lead aspects of design yourself.
Promoting blue-green infrastructure and SuDS to others within the wider WSP business, as well as applying your technical skills to projects of local and national importance, will also be key parts of your role.
You can expect to:
- Provide technical input on urban drainage projects, predominantly SuDS and blue-green infrastructure.
- Work on bespoke, challenging projects, requiring creativity and problem solving – not just standard drainage design!
- Produce high-quality technical outputs, including reports, drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Support the development of engineering solutions, from feasibility studies to detailed design and construction.
- Contribute to the learning of the wider team through knowledge sharing exercises.
- Promote the WSP brand through appropriate industry forums and conferences.
ResponsibilitiesAs an Assistant Engineer you will occupy a pivotal role within the Blue Green Infrastructure team, providing the foundation for all our work. The team comprises a mix of engineers with a wide range of industry experience, and services projects across the full spectrum of WSP’s client base.
You could find yourself supporting the team in:
- Contributing to multi-disciplinary public realm improvement schemes & large-scale SuDS retrofit projects.
- Producing engineering designs for urban drainage projects at a range of scales, and for a range of clients, including local authorities, regulated water companies, and developers.
- Working on complex, high-profile projects, including SuDS and urban design projects in the heart of London and other major towns and cities.
- Helping local authorities to prevent flooding to homes and businesses.
- Assisting in developing fee proposals and winning work.
Qualifications- A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil or environmental engineering, construction, environmental science, geography, etc.).
- A knowledge of, or some experience in, urban drainage design.
- Some experience or understanding of hydraulic modelling, using industry-standard software (e.g. InfoWorks, InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, Flow).
- Competence with AutoCAD (Civil 3D an advantage).
- Familiarity with any industry-standard geographical information systems (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo, etc.).
- A high degree of computer literacy and the ability to work as part of a team.
As well as these attributes, we expect you to have a genuine interest in improving stormwater management through the use of blue-green infrastructure, and a desire to make better places for people and the environment.
