Basic Check
The Environment Agency is evolving the way we regulate water companies. While we recognise their vital role in managing the water cycle
- removing, treating, and returning water to meet personal and business needs - it is essential that they operate in a way that minimises environmental harm.

We currently regulate sewage treatment works, storm overflows, and compliance with water flow standards. However, with growing awareness of the impact of sewage on our environment, we are more committed than ever to transforming water industry regulation. By driving higher performance standards and using our resources more effectively, we are strengthening our efforts to protect and enhance the environment for future generations.

As a Senior Regulatory Environment Officer, you’ll play a crucial role in protecting and improving the environment by ensuring water companies operate responsibly. Through inspections, audits, and incident investigations, you will assess compliance, identify areas for improvement, and take enforcement action when necessary. In serious cases, this may involve providing evidence in court. Your expertise will support managers, contribute to training programmes, and help shape best practices to enhance regulatory performance.

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment.

In this role, your base location can be either Leeds (Lateral House, LS11 9AT), York (Foss House, YO1 7PX), Rotherham (Bradmarsh Business Park, S60 1BY) or Beverley (Crosskill Office, HU17 9JW). However, we welcome applications from those who may not meet this exact requirement but can demonstrate relevant skills, experience, and a passion for environmental protection.

Dedicated, passionate, and confident, your background in regulation and compliance will provide a strong foundation for success. Your drive and determination will complement your ability to deliver results through mentorship and communication. Managing multiple tasks and leading a team requires strong planning and prioritisation skills. A science or engineering background, along with a friendly and open approach, will help you thrive.

A relevant professional membership is desirable, and we’ll support you in obtaining this. Due to the role’s nature and locations, a full UK driving licence is essential and non-negotiable.
