Job Description

  • Play an important role in the research, analysis and evaluation of a variety of investment opportunities including managing the overall evaluation process
  • Participate in meetings with company management teams, industry experts and analysts
  • Build working relationships with colleagues and leaders across the firm, alongside company management teams and investment partners
  • Perform due diligence on opportunities including past and projected financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors
  • Lead development of sophisticated dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (including testing assumptions and sensitivities)
  • Oversee preparation of analytical investment reviews and recommendations, including industry overviews, written investment rationales and due diligence reviews
  • Assist in presenting investment recommendations to the Investment Committee and Board, as required
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of existing portfolios
  • Update financial models and other analytical tools to support the idea generation process and rational behind changes in investment view
  • Manage and guide the work of junior team members and assist departmental initiatives, processes and meetings 

Team Description 

CPP Investments’ Sustainable Energies Group (SEG) combines the organization’s expertise in renewables, conventional energy and new technology and service solutions to position CPP Investments as the leading global energy investor. SEG has approximately $36 billion in assets, making it highly competitive and flexible in the large and dynamic global energy sector.

SEG takes advantage of growing market opportunities as the energy sector evolves and global power demand grows, especially for low-carbon energy alternatives. The group holds a diversified portfolio primarily comprised of long-term tangible assets, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro, as well as conventional power, upstream oil & gas and energy midstream. It also invests in areas of innovation, technology and services to the energy industries. 

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Senior Associate will:

  • Support the execution of new investments opportunities with focus in North America - helping to manage/optimize existing platforms/partnerships, identifying new market opportunities, and executing new investments 
  • Strong deal execution capabilities
  • Support asset management in Americas, building and leveraging the competencies of the Sustainable Energy Group team
  • Ability to build relationships across cultures/geographies, including with key advisors/partners/management teams
  • Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, industry specialists, etc.)
  • Coach, mentor and develop junior team members
  • Work effectively with Sustainable Energy Group team members, investment committees and other parts of CPP Investments
  • Be part of a global team, participating in global strategic initiatives and staffing model
  • Be a strong culture carrier within the Sustainable Energy Group team, demonstrating CPP Investments’ guiding principles and the Sustainable Energy Group’s core principles of innovation, collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in relevant field
  • An advanced degree or certification (CFA) is an asset
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience
  • Strong research, analytical, financial modeling, valuation, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively
  • Experience working in deal environments including participation in the diligence and structuring processes related to acquisitions, financing transactions or investments, and/or asset management activities
  • Experience managing successful negotiations with multiple stakeholders and executing a wide range of agreements
